Dyno results, disappointing and confusing, any ideas?

Featured Replies

OK, so had a good day with some of the lads from the Welsh contingent at Group B yesterday and got my car on the rollers.  I just wanted to know where it was at.  It's stage 1 basically, got stage 1 performance map, 80mm cold feed to panel filter, been Terracleaned, Forge 007 and a golf iv intercooler (slightly larger than stock) and a couple of silicone hoses.  Therefore I was hoping for and expecting over 200bhp (map is proposing 220), maybe 210 and somewhere near the proposed 350nms of torque.  If I'd made that I'd be fairly happy, but as you can see from the graphs below, really it was nowhere near.  Not only that but the line was 'fluttery', the chap on the rollers suggesting it may be holding back spark for some reason, its had new lazer iridiums gapped at 0.7 and all new coils under the recall recently.  To be honest, the nature of the line or the low output doesn't really reflect the way it drives, but something clearly isn't right, why is the output so low and not smooth?

I'm not even sure it's a mapping issue, I've spoken to the dealer who put the map on and he reckons it may be a MAF or a MAP sensor issue, but if this was the case surely there would be rough running in general, and its ok, and it should have still got somewhere near the numbers I expected.

I'm scratching my head a little bit to be honest.  Is it a mapping issue? Why was output low? Why was line so fluttery?  If I get it put back to standard what would I lose?  Would it run better and be somewhere near 180?

I've got the dealer talking to the tuner at the moment but still waiting on ideas.  It's not a VAG specialist tune, but I know my dealer has run their maps on his vws and been to dyno days and had no issues, so I'll just be clear that I'm not naming and shaming them, I'm just rather confused.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

Another reason to throw away the 'piston' dump valves, the OEM ones are far more reliable and require no servicing

  • You should be running the yellow spring in the forge valve for anything other than standard.

Has it been compression tested?

Unless you know where it was before you started its very difficult to identify the reason, your car could have been only making 140 before you tuned it :(

Yeah shame I had no before dyno test.  Not been compression tested as far as I know, has been smoke tested.  It's only on 74k miles and been terraclened, I've always used v power since I got it in June.  Would you recommend a compression test?  What kind of things could I look at on vag com?

Was it mapped when you got it?

Pretty sure it was standard dude, nothing in paperwork and nothing else popped up on ecu when mapped before.

More I read and think about it the more I suspect compression. Would vcds lite give me compression info?

Hmm as after the map shouldve been like someone put a new engine in the car.  The compression check is a manual thing with a guage

That's the thing the drive and mpg were improved after the map, although the comparisons are confused slightly because I only ran it as standard for a week and then had a bad map which this new one replaced. I don't think it's a mapping issue though but I'll also be surprised if it's cylinder related. It's a bit concerning to be honest.

Might not be making requested boost.

Check hoses for Splits? After doing all the deletes my car ran so much better. It used to surge a little. Maybe this is what's happening here?

I'll check with my guy what boost the tuner wrote into it, why might it not be making it?  What might cause that?

It had a smoke test done fairly recently, I've had no limp mode or eml come on.  I do intend to do the deletes but I don't think this accounts for the low output.  The curves themselves aren't too bad, certainly doesn't look as if there's a spike or real surges there, just that fluttery business.  Hope it is map related to be honest, don't really fancy forking out for a cylinder head rebuild or similar very much.

Probably best compression test it then go elsewhere for a map? Who's map are you currently running?

I'd be more inclined to be looking at the map.

Unless it's been mistreated in the past i would be amazed if its low compression after 74k. And I'm certain you've mentioned before its had an easy life. The figures are very low though I'm sure people have had standard cars with 190bhp so for stage 1 it is poor. Have you scanned for logged codes? Imo its either faulty maf sensor or a map issue.

Yeah I think I'm going to play it twofold, get a compression test done while I try and get some answers out of the tuner. I think the map does require further examination but I'm reluctant to name them in case that's not the problem. As mentioned they're not vag specialists or site sponsors, but as I said I know of vws they've mapped that have been on rollers with no issues. Maybe a 220 map was asking too much of the car though?

I too would be amazed if it's low compression but I'm struggling to explain the low figures. With the terraclean and other bits it really should be making 210 I'm sure. Like I said it runs smooth with no misfires so it is a headscratcher. Yeah it's low mileage had a lady owner and been a family car as there's child seats fitted on mot advisories. Haven't scanned yet, I'll Try get that done this week. If it was map or maf wouldn't there be more running issues?

Im too thinking the map.  When I had mine done the car was a completely different drive.  If you didnt think 'omg' when you had it done it doesnt sound like its performing right

Best not blame the map until everything is checked first. If everything is showing ok then either look at the map or get it on another dyno to compare.

Yeah I'm going to check logs next step, what should I be looking for re MAP and MAF or anything else related? I have a spare pattern part MAF I can try in the meantime.

I'll have to check what's groups you will need to log. Not very clued up on this ecu.

Cheers John, I've ordered a cable anyway, might try and talk the map dealer into plugging his in too.

I can't comment on the map sensor but I've had two mafs go bad during my ownership and both times initially it was a lack of performance. Just felt sluggish not responsive like it usually is. But there was no misfires or fault codes logged. Eventually running issues cropped up but it was a long time. You could unplug it and see if performance improves.

Cheers ears good plan, normally when you hear of maf issues the car's going mental, will give it a try.

Unless the mapper does logging before and after and understands the logs this will happen

Could be mechanical issue could be software related issue

Need to run some logs and see what your ecu is asking for and if it's reaching it etc

Could be lots of things

P.s terra clean achieves nothing on the 1.8t

Imo contact the mapper and get them to check if there any good won't take long to find the issue or solve it

Cheers I've got the dealer talking to the tuner and will get to some logging
