Chip Express or Remap - What say you?

Featured Replies

Just thought I'd spark a bit of a debate....

I've been looking through the site for discussions on Tuning Boxes and Chip Express units in particular. I was wondering why there's a massive post propensity in favour of remapping vehicles over tuning boxes?

So, what are actual "real world" advantages of a remap over a unit that appears to give similar performance increases, is installable and removable in five minutes, has a residual value and is upgradable to your next car?

Ding-ding... Round One...! :|

You're not comparing equivalent things. A good remap re-programs the whole ECU, keeps everything in balance and gives more power safely. A tuning box usually messes with sensor inputs to confuse the ECU and make it think it needs to add more fuel. Or does nothing:

Ok interesting Rob. What does a remap do that an inline chip does not? I presume to get more power and torque, a remap must, in some way, inject more fuel? Ignoring the fake units on ebay, are you saying that "real" in-line injection chips such as DTUK or Chip Express "unbalance" the engine?

The Chip Express boxes are obviously more sophisticated than the example in the video. The removable idea is good too. I wonder why they only do diesels.

Im asking a similar question. But the boxes you suggest raise rail pressure thus increasing diesel pump loading... not a good idea. Maps control a number of thing in pressure but also duration.

The boxes are approx £360. I'd spend the extra and get a ecu remap, shark currently have a group by with free switching box, so you can easy put back to std :-) only £500 or £450 if freedom member....

Well worth the extra....
