Day from Hell ! Never trust Sat Nav,Result £2000 damage

Featured Replies

There's a big difference between a momentary lapse of concentration and driving for several miles along an unmade track that's too narrow and unmade, reaching points where you just "go for it"

I hope he has one of the more understanding insurance companies. Over 3 grands worth of paint damage is going to take a lot of explaining.....

This is exactly why when I'm going somewhere unknown, I research the journey before hand and have a look at actual maps before setting the sat nav. No offence but at the point where "It directed me to

Theres a reason satnavs have female voices. It's to remind you not to trust them to be able to read a map.

Comprehensive Insurance does cover accidental damage actually.

You're wrong I'm afraid.

I think you should re-read what I wrote.

Comprehensive insurance is for accidents.  If someone chooses to continue along a road unsuited for their vehicle (even if it's a public road) then is that an accident or simply poor judgement?  If somebody puts petrol in their diesel car that they've owned for several years that's an accident.  If they choose to drive it hoping they'll make it home to tell hubby about it that's not an accident. I know of a Toureg that had $20k worth of engine damage paid for by insurance because the owner chose to press on despite knowing it was running on petrol and running like a bag of poo.

If you get surrounded by a flash flood it's an accident.  If you drive through flood waters for no good reason that's deciding to take a risk.

I don't think that's something he'll be admitting to

If he wasn't fully awake he shouldn't have been driving in the first place

Plenty of people out there driving while not fully awake or their mind not fully on the job.  I think some of you should go & sit with Jesus so you can compare what sin free lives you have led.

My apologies, I didn't realise that making a comment on one issue suddenly made me a saint

Well said.....poor lads made a mistake......hopefully he learns from it & doesnt do it again.....everybody has made a mistake one way or another in their lifetimes.....

Edited as my mistake today was poor spelling! :D

I would expect a complete respray for under £1500, and they would do a much better job than the skoda factory did, shop around and get more quotes, they are mugging you off.

This (some of the above posts) is why the polis now refer to Road Traffic Collisions

not Accidents.

Simply because , like the OP, they were not an "accident" rather the only, easily forseeable or predictable outcome for the choosen course of action.

"It was an accident mate"

No it fornicating was not!, from personal direct experience and observation.

From some-one who is also capable of, and has "made mistakes"

But many feel the use of the "accident" word absolves them of any personal responsibility.

"The car left the road, it was an accident"

Not, I lost control/misjudged/was driving too fast/was not paying attention/failed to anticipate ice/

etcetc

Marcus

Was this the new and updated version of park assist called drive assist that took control of your steering wheel, brakes and accelerator?

And still no pictures

Guys, we're not gonna see any pics after so many people have basically alluded to him being a bit of a div for doing this, and then possibly thinking his quote should be an insurance job because he's almost accepting a quote which, and let's be honest here, most of us think is daylight robbery for a respray (albeit that there might be some sort of welding or other work we're not being told of to be able to GET to the stage of allowing a respray).

Just saying. :)

"After that, my guess is that you will never hear from him again. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. And like that... he is gone."

I have just found out how to upload photos as found the full version of the forum on my mobile. However I am currently on holiday and changed my micro SD card in the phone prior to setting off on holiday and the photos were stored on the other SD card so I won't be able to upload any till I get home in 10 days.

I agree, the estimate does seem steep, I took the car to an independent accident repair place where I know their head estimater as I would rather take it to people I know I can trust rather than to complete strangers to be assessed.

I don't know how these things work but he said that is quoted at the top rate but would come down after negoiation with the insurance company, whatever that means. End of the day, I have only had the car two months and plan on keeping it for 7 years at least as its a 62 plate car with less than 35k on the clock, so the job needs doing right, hence why I took it to a repairers I know will do a good job putting it right again for me.

After all is said and done, it was a moment in my life that I am not proud of and really wish didn't happen and wish I could start that day all over again and do things differently but unfortunately I can't. I made and error of judgement which led me to getting myself into a situation I wasn't able to see the clear solution to at the time due to it being dark and the brain not functioning at its best due to the early hour of the day.

This whole situation has left me depressed but hopefully the car will be put back to its former glory when I return home.

I see £2000 was estimated in your first post

Where did that estimate come from, or was it just a figure plucked out of the air, as it's way off what your known, trusted assessor has come up with?

I'm guessing that's nearer whsy it will actually cost, and the £3500 figure has been put forward in the hope the insurers will come down somewhere in between, thereby still creating a reasonable 'profit' margin

Unlucky chap. My 3 day old VRS was treated to a trip through a cow-muck covered farmyard and skirted a wood using a new TOMTOM 50 about 2 months ago. I couldn't understand why it had taken me on such poor roads, until I found the Fastest Route option had a box with UNPAVED roads ticked. I quickly unticked it! I am afraid that we tend to blindly follow Satnavs in unfamiliar areas. I also scratched my MKII all over accidentally using a grit-covered washing hose at a garage car wash en route to a family christening. I had been camping the previous night and it was covered in mud. It cost me £600 to put right, the only good part is that the stone chips and faded rear spoiler were put right and the car still look sped mint when I sold it recently. Moral of the story is that you must use your eyes and brain, but s?%t happens sometimes, even to those who offer wise counsel. It happens to most people.

This whole situation has left me depressed but hopefully the car will be put back to its former glory when I return home.

It's only a car mate.  Don't let it get you down.

The measure of a person is not whether they have problems, it's how they recover & move on afterwards.

I tried but had no signal where I was. Estimate has come back this morning at £3564 which is definitely out of my league so will have to go through the insurance.

As others said - FAR too much!

For that price u can get someone to FULLY restore a classic car!!! :o

My 1989 Honda had a full body spray by a manufacturer s approved bodyshop for cash payment £800 - so a proper job would be about £1500-£2000 - considering my bodyshop also remove ALL trims, bonnets, badges and bumpers off as well! :D
