MY10 Estate DSG 170 - Some issues - Any ideas?

Featured Replies

Chaps,

I've had this car for almost 2 years now and I'm somewhat smitten.

Ever since I've owned it there have been 2 minor niggles. When I mentioned them both to the dealer when servicing, they test drove the car and told me they were just 'characteristics' of the car. Yeah right I thought, but because they were only minor annoyances, I didn't push things. I'm now at the point I'd like to get to the bottom of them and wondered if anyone with a bit more knowledge than me can help.

Issue 1: When slowing to a stop the car seems to subtly jolt forward as if I had pressed the brake pedal too hard. The issue is better the slower you come to a stop, but it is virtually impossible to eliminate the jolt altogether. Issue happens regardless of whether box is in Drive or Sport mode. Possible culprits (based entirely on guesswork) - 1. poor DSG adaption/mechatronics issue - unlikely, because jolt doesn't always correspond with downshift from 2nd to 1st; 2. bad/loose engine/transmission mounts; 3. Flywheel issue

Issue 2: When at speed and under load the engine emits a faint rattling noise from the passenger side. The noise is particularly noticeable just after having changed from 4th gear to 5th gear and continues whilst there is low engine speed (i.e. high load) in 5th gear. It's not the well-known air intake problem at low revs - I've fixed that - and also problem doesn't occur when engine is revved not under load (i.e. in neutral). I'm also pretty certain it isn't the glove box rattling issue - it seems unlikely that this would be linked to engine speed/load. Possible culprits (based entirely on guesswork) - 1. known metal engine bay cladding rattling issue - seems unlikely because issue seems to be load related and rattle would occur independent of load; 2. bad/loose engine/transmission mounts - if very loose, they may rattle; 3. Flywheel issue - although my understanding is that this would cause noticeable problems at low driving speed - apart from a bit of DSG 'hesitation', I don't appear to have this; 3. issues with belts/tensioners/ pulleys (I think they're all on the passenger side of the engine) - cam belt replaced recently-ish, so unlikely to be that, but I've heard that the clutched alternator pulley is prone to failure, is that a possibility?

Has anyone got any thoughts, similar experiences or suggestions how to diagnose the problem or eliminate any of the possible culprits discussed above?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The jolt forward may be the suspension or CV joints developing a bit of play, but it sounds like the kind of thing a DMF would do as if this has gone rattly there will be free travel as the car goes from having the engine driving the wheels to the wheels driving the engine on slowing down.

For the second rattle, check whether the passenger side vent near the door is causing it. This is common and is fixed easily enough by packing foam between the vent and the dashboard. At high load and low revs the engine will produce more low frequency vibration than in other driving situations, so if something resonates at this frequency it will only be noticeable when the revs are low and the load is high.

Thanks psycholist - I'll have a look at the vent this weekend - it doesn't sound like it's coming from inside the cabin, but sometimes sound can be thrown around!

Any other thoughts would also be appreciated.

That all points to the DMF tbh and I had the same thing in my B6 Passat, I didn't go to the cost of having it fixed though,

The thud is the motion run on in the wear in the DMF as best I can tell and the rattle is the the wear also and as it's passenger side it's exactly where the gearbox is located,

Open the bonnet on cold and start her up, listen for what sounds like a pebble in a washing machine or a worn out brake  pad/disc sound in that area, then putting it in gear will silence it.

Here is a DSG with a failed/failing DMF.

Also sounds like a metal rod being scraped around a metal cylinder,

Your video doesn't show it out fully to someone whose not heard it before, I can hear it myself but others might not, and it's as the guy says, in gear it shuts up, cold you hear it, hot it drops off.

Modern clutches and flywheels are tin foil and cardboard in quality anyway, it's the ink cart in a printer, i.e you can have the car for reasonable money but it will cost you to run it, my mum whose not the best at getting her foot off the clutch pedal ate 2 new full kits in 6000 miles, seems quite common as well according to garage staff I know, another fella who is a brilliant driver has had 3 in his Octavia in 140000 miles.

Thanks for the advice chaps - much appreciated.  I'll investigate the DMF - the 'rattle' doesn't seem to change as I move between park and drive - but I've only had a listen in the cabin. I'll do a walkaround at the weekend and let you know.

To check the 'jolt' issue when coming to a halt, pusth the drive selector into neutral as you slow. I suspect it''s a function of the DSG gearbox going down through the lower ratios, the system then magnifies the torque you feel being applied, which causes the car to apparently accelerate as the lower gear (e.g. 3 to 2 or 2 to 1) is selected. I suspect this isn't a problem . . .
