non-mechanical way of fixing front ashtray

Featured Replies

When I bought my vRS the ashtray mechanism was broken and would not stay closed.

Here is how I fixed it.

You need:

4 small magnets

double sided tape

glue

gaffer tape

And yes, I know it needs a vacuum/dusting.

Glue a small magnet to the top corners of the lid.

I used another magnet on the other side of the plastic to hold it in place whilst the glue cured.

On the bottom corner of the ashtray trim use a small amount of double sided tape to secure another magnet, for some reason glue does not last long on this part, after experimentation this seemed the best compromise.

Just doing one side will hold it shut although is slightly wonky so I attached magnets to both sides.

I used gaffer tape (carefully colour coded!) over the top of the bottom magnet.

Tadaaa!

Light finger pressure is all that is required to open and close the flap now and minimal messing about :)

Excellent idea, I might need to do this soon as the mechanism on my ashtray hasn't appreciated it being heavily used as a change tray and general stowage bin.

Where did those particular magnets come from, have you got a source or were they something you had knocking around?

I fixed mine with a small screw from a laptop to replace the snapped pin which sits in the groove.

Fully adjustable too lol

I don't sorry, car is long gone.

Basically I could see where little piece that goes in the guide inside the ashtray housing had snapped of so I drilled through where it used to be and put a tiny screw (about 5mm) in its place.

Then I just adjusted the screws position in there using the thread. Theres a guide in the housing that lets it close tight then when you press the lid it slides back and up. This is what locks the lid shut.

Does that make sense, take a closer look at your s and you should be able to see what I mean.

Fixed mine with a tiny bolt I pilfered from my dad's nut n bolt collection. Drilled a small pilot hole and then screwed the bolt in. An added bonus was when I ground it down to the correct length it melted the plastic of the mechanism slightly, and when it cooled the bolt wasn't going anywhere.
