VRS turbo actuator

Featured Replies

Not much.

The actuator opens the penny valve to allow boost to bleed away when a given pressure is reached. The pressure is determined by how strong the spring is so a stronger spring will allow the turbo to make a higher boost level. Thing is, the boost is electronically controlled also.

Its more of an item to include as part of extensive modifications

agreed. an uprated part for if you are upping the performance (and boost)

Maybe best to see how the replacement engine and new ECU or MAP they install behaves before thinking of upgrading if it is a CTHE they fit in your car.

It will be interesting to see how different it performs to the CAVE if it is a CTHE that goes in.

Can this actuator adjust the boost without a remap or does the ECU control the boost?

The actuator doesn't adjust the boost itself but it rather allows the turbo to reach the requested pressure (commanded by the map) by being strong enough in order not to vent prematurely. So, when asking for much higher than stock boost levels, a waste-gate upgrade is due as the stock spring is too weak to maintain the upped boost. But at least to my understanding, you don't just turn the boost levels up like that (even if you can do it by such an upgrade). The map should be altered to support the upped boost by a proper mixture otherwise you'll experience misfires or worse...

Stock and Stage 1 cars don't even need it. Some stage 2 maps, especially custom ones do go together with upgraded wg's or at least (the cheap approach) tightened ones (means stock). I have seen mine going from 1.5 bar to 1.6 or even 1.65 after tightening the wg nut by 3 turns but it's not so much about absolute max boost as it is about higher boost levels all along the rev range. Of course, as I said this was done with my tuner's consent.

I think Forge comes with different springs to support different power stages.

Thanks for the reply
