a second car looking for ideas

Featured Replies

Main cars a Octavia CArs with stage 1 shark

I am liking to but a second car

Maximum budget £15k but really tempted by a 996 turbo

Want something fun, no need for convertible or too much practicality.

Ideas so far

Toyota MR2 a late model

Porsche Cayman (s)

Mini Cooper

Bmw z4 coupe

M3 6 cylinder car

Caveat is it will be parked outside do I need something that week handle that

Any other ideas

Gary

Z4M

Fiesta ST?

Mx5 roadster coupe? Loads of fun with a retractable hard top.

996 turbo is the obvious choice, but running cost could be high. You could buy a late model MR2 with a smokey engine and have a tuned 2gr-fe fitted for that sort of money. Fast, raw, brutal, fun. If you are around the with east, you can have a ride in mine for a taste of the mayhem.

Cayman! Didn't the 996 suffer with a lot of engine issues?

370z ?

The turbo has the Metzger engine, virtually bombproof, no intermediate gear issues.

Early 996 suffered cylinder liner problems I believe which would neanderthal a full rebuild.

I'd go for a m3 or z4m

As Chris says the turbo does not have those issues. Turbo doubles the budget though.

370z is tempting

Z4M when reviewed often the 3.0 z4 was considered the better all round car

Modifying an MR2 not sure I want to do all that as would never get the money back

Chris us that south east, I am based near Guildford the car sounds interesting

Its the same as people saying the pd130 is better than the pd150, it isnt its just cheapskates trying to justify their purchase.

Z4M kicks the arse right out of the Z4 3.0si

EVO don't have that bias Jase and let's face it the z4M is more their type of car

I think I would have am M3 rather than a Z4M but obviously would need to drive then to be sure

Cayman S are similarly priced to Cayman S do that's easy

I like the loss of both the Z4 and Z4M

Z4 3.0 is under budget by someway I can see some serious testing

Just seen I can get an early Aston vantage V8 now that's really tempting

Thing is, all the options listed bar one will lose money, the 996 turbo is likely to hold it's value or even gain some now. They bottomed out price wise about 18 months ago and have been gaining value since.

Anything highly modified is throwing money away, but smiles per pound is the thing. I'm in Essex of you wanted a taste of three MR2, I will be at next month's Maidstone meet. Here's another thought, Lotus Europa?

Agree that's why the 996 appeals

Yes your going to have to drive them and see if the 3.0l is enough for you.

My boss bought a 3.0si as a weekend car, loved the car but in his words 'wasn't quick enough' so after a month upgraded to the Z4M

I do prefer the M wheels and twin exit exhaust! Oh and in imola red too :o

Something British maybe?

Lotus Elise or if your really brave a tvr

Else won't work, parked on the road and I am not nimble enough to get in

Did think about an whites but they are too expensive.

Honda S2000

Toyota GT86 (not sure if they'll be down that low yet)

Would have said Caterham 7 but the outside storage rules that out.

Well looked at a fiesta st today, not driven just looked. Very nice. It's also by some margin the cheapest of the options to run.

The Cayman is 485 to tax and the fiesta 130

Insurance was a pleasant surprise

Bear in mind zero no claims

Cayman S under £500, mountune fiesta under £300. To compare our octavia stage 1 vrs is 260 with full ncd

Decisions will be sometime

Not a fan of the s2000

Gt86/BRZ still too expensive

You are right on the caterham no garage.

You can buy a Toyota GT86 Manual for under £15,000.

There is an Automatic in Silver on Autotrader with a £12,500 'Asking Price'.

102,000 miles on the auto. Rather a lot for a 2 year old car

Shows it is well used and not just a Sunday car unless it goes a long way on a Sunday.

If it is all good at that mileage, it say a lot for them.

Sadly there were and are issues though with some.

A member here went from a Fabia vRS Twincharger to the Toyota and is now in a Fabia MK1 vRS i think.

Maybe he can give his experience if he spots this.
