Head Gasket Dilema

You need to read the fault codes, it's possible the ECU is shutting down number 2 due to a misfire, try an old plug in number 2 and clear all the codes.

Have this car up and running for 2 weeks now and have 500 miles on the clock.

Sepulchre, you were right about the misfire - I removed no. 2 spark plug to find it had a crack on it. I damaged it putting in because it goes in at an awkward angle.

The car is running like a dream, and I have no more worries about pressure in the coolant bottle and constantly having to top up the coolant level.

Overall it wasn't too difficult a job, and there is great satisfaction in

having a reliable car up and running for under 300 hundred Euro.

One quick question, I bought the cheap code reader that someone on here recommended (worked on their car)

but it won't communicate.

Anyone know of a code reader that will work on a 00 1.4 8 valve Fabia?

To finish, I really appreciate the help I got on here, thanks a million.

my fault code reader was only £20, but IIRC the protocol on the Petrol Fabias is ISO 9141-2. As long as the reader is compatible with that standard, it should work.

Well done regarding the engine swap, I have had the front off to do a Radiator swap, took a total of 2.5 hours including clean up so i dont think takes much longer to pull the engine out of the front if a crane isnt available,

I've tried those bluetooth scanners that connect with your smartphone. I can confirm they are *not* working with a 1.4mpi (may 2000). Everything is fine with an USB cable and a laptop.
