Im wondering if its part of my ongoing electrical gremlins ><

That doesn't sound good! Supplying permanent, unfused live to something that presumable shouldn't have permanent live!

doesnt go into air box, goes around the back to the ECU.. also lots of duct taperage around the ECU... i know i will fcker things up more if i get in there :P

i also have a spade connection on the negative, looks to go down past the washer to the headlights/ fogs ?

I'm gonna say someone's tried a "resistor" mod in the past. Possibly some board or epoxied thingy under all of that tape.

recon just leave it disconnected?

I would agree with vindaloo, its possible the previous person even had a switch inside car to go from normal to sport and economy(tricking the maf into diffent conditions).

You could take it apart and see whats been done exactly, or have maf deleted and tune the car to run on map sensor.

I was thinking the same as above. Leave it until you want it remapped and just get it remapped out of the system.
