Faint Sshhhh sound when using the brakes?

Featured Replies

Skoda don't make the pads they just use what is available.

Yes it's a common issue to to keep costs down Skoda use none/ very little sound proofing. I'm a little bit too far away from you otherwise you'd be welcome to drive mine but it has the same issue. It's very common on some newer cars. When Nissan first released the P12 Primera there were multiple complaints of the same issue. Nissan then changed the maker of the OEM rear pads around 2 years later.

  • Yeah one of my main Criticisms about my Octy is complete lack of sound proofing. Being out in heavy rain is horrible and I once had to go through a drive through car wash and the noise of the water ag

Oh I see so the only way to get rid of the sound is to change the pads or live with them till they need replacing right?

Pretty much yes.

I take safety seriously especially when I have my kids onboard the car and logic common sense tell me that a noise from a car is warning/problem especially from the brakes hence the reason I started this thread. The last thing I want to do is go on a internet forum and waste my time winding people up. So busy hardly have no time.

I have accepted members advice as suggested in the thread and that is to see a VAG specialist which I will do plus other members said a 100% diagnosis cant be done online so its better to be safe than sorry by visiting a VAG specialist.

In fact I wont tell them my problems at all and let them get on with the health check. If this so called Birmingham VAG Specialist is so good then they be able to pick up the problems without me telling them. If they come back and say my car has passed the heath check then it shows they haven't checked properly.

I keep you guys updated.

It sounds like you are trying to set them up to fail.

I think somebody mentioned earlier that the relationship between client & technician requires a certain amount  of trust & respect.  It's like being in a relationship, communication & honesty is a key factor in making it work.  I had some absolutely fantastic customers - they were like friends and made the job worthwhile (because the money wasn't great).  It was the ones who didn't have trust that made me move into aircraft work.

Here's an idea.  Pay my air ticket & I'll come over & road test the car.  I'll even do the work to fix it if I can access a workshop.  As long as I can go narrow boating while I'm there I'm in.

All I want is my car to be ok, I dont want to wind people up or set up mechanics to fail.

Wasted my time visiting a VAG specialist today for a free brake health check. They try to fob me off back to the Skoda dealership after I declared the problem to them unless I paid them £££'s for a proper health check. Total Scam! Appalling Service! Never even checked my car. Avoid Central Audi & VW Birmingham like the plague.

This is EXACTLY the reason I suggested you keep quiet and don't tell them their job!  :wall:  :wall:  :wall:

You can't expect a health check if you deliberately tell them there is something wrong! Come on.

If you tell them there is a problem, and I suspect from what you said here that you told them it has already been into Skoda, it is not appalling service. If there was a problem, and I'm saying IF, they are not going to touch your car when it is already being dealt with by the main agents. The OBVIOUS course of action for them is to refer you back the the dealer that is already involved in your concerns.

Wait a min you guys were accusing me earlier of 'setting up a mechanic to fail' when I stated earlier I wont declare the problem to them. Today I took your advise that is declaring the problem and now I end up with this mess at the VAG specialist.

I wasn't telling them their job. I just told them the problem like you guys advised me to. Now I wished I haven't declared the problem beforehand and pretended my car was perfectly fine and let them get on with the free health check, regardless their service was appalling anyway and I wouldn't give my keys to them after experiencing on what they are like.

So I'm back to square 1 again which is back to the dealership in which you guys opposed to. Its like going around in circles. Cant believe all this hassle just to check the brakes.

So it looks like I am out of options meaning I'm continue driving the car hoping that its the hard compound brake pads that's causing the noise. I would prefer peace of mind and re-assurance that it is but it seems it never gonna happen.

You could always book it in for an MOT somewhere, if there's something wrong with the breaks an MOT should show it up.

Out of options?

Surely there's more than one VAG specialist, brake specialist or generalist mechanic where you live / work?  Have you asked your neighbours, friends or work mates where they go for their vehicle repairs?

What about a shout-out for another member in your area that can take the vehicle for a quick spin & give an opinion?

Ok thats a good idea, how do I find out where local members live on these forums?

  • Author

Many thanks I found a couple of local members by me however how do I know whether they are experienced/expertise in my car that have tools or just a clueless member like me? I don't mind paying the standard £30 per hour garage labour rate.

Yes its just that my confidence is kinda dented after the experiences I mentioned on my threads however I be happy for a forum member to diagnose my problem and hopefully that will boost my confidence. So is there any local members that live in Birmingham that can reply to this thread?

I'd be amazed if anyone on here WANTS to get in your car after the way you've talked about given advice, and slated garages who seemed to do what most of us would have expected them to do if you tell them something's wrong (calling someone who obviously knows more than you about cars 'so-called' before you've even seen them just smacks of derision and disrespect!).

It's massively coming across that you're after a cheap fix as easy as possible without any exploration work because you don't trust anyone unless they can guarantee you they know what it is, this follows what people have speculated it is, and they're willing to do it first time. Workmen love employers who stand over their shoulder while they on the job.

I'm a relaxed guy but, Mike, you've got more patience than I, sir!

Still, it's been entertaining. :notme:
