2015 VRS Petrol engine knocking sound from engine on cold start

Featured Replies

Mine makes a bzzzzt noise After starting but it sounds like something electrical not like a starter issue

?

Any update then on the OP & the knocking from cold.?

As to the various other noises that people get,

they might well be 'Normal'  as in on cars making the noise.

But,

only Normal in the way that Technicians or Service Desk / Sales Staff say , 'They all do that'.

Ask a Factory Engineer & they might actually point out the engine was not designed to make strange noises.

But then engines will need to make some noises, and obviously some are Normal.

(Skoda Dealership employees are people quite often called Tommy,  or very like Tommy,  Deaf Dumb & Blind.)

The bzzt mine makes sounds electrical like. Its always made it and I've not heard a tsi that doesn't make it.

Fuel pump priming ?

Ah now mine does make a hum for a second or 2 as I turn on the ignition, before I start.  I suppose my hum could be described as a buzz, a whine or even a purr (from an odd robotic cat). If only I were pitch perfect..... Its higher than Doe ... More like a Ray... Or maybe a Me. Not a Far though.... Not to my ears.

It makes it after it has started... Although it is a similar kind of noise. Will have a better listen later.

With a Fabia 1.4 TSI the fuel pump primes when you unlock and open the drivers door before you even put the key in the ignition.

Lights doing their happy dance (aka, self test)?   No... That's before start too I think.... Dunno.... I've clearly become accustomed to all the little  whirs the car makes.

The automatic AC also probably opens vents after you turn on the power. There are so many of those little sounds in a modern car.

I would be very surprised if the fuel pump receives power with the ignition off

It's probably more common that it would than that it wouldn't in a modern car.

RichF,  you and your Mum have one, so do they or do they not prime the Fuel Pump?

Because mine have done.

Maybe worth checking out what does and does not happen with door opening,

often it accounts for various noises, and sometimes Techs know and other Dealership staff are clueless to it.

Different Ambient Temperatures & altitudes can cause different starting noises as to how long the vehicle has been sitting etc.

Even the MY99 Bora I had ages ago did that.

Thanks one and all for all the quick reply's

here is more detail on this

When you start from cold the engine sounds O.K. when it is ticking  over there is a slight ticking which I am lead to believe is normal for this engine

But as soon as you drive away under medium throttle there is a distinct banging noise it sounds as if it is coming from just behind the fire wall fairly high up hence my question about the waste gate, as I am sure you all know the Turbo on the 2015 VRS is indeed just behind the bulkhead, I am sorry I am not able to open the bonnet and listen due to the fact the car has to be moving.

Heard from the dealers today, and they want me to take the car back run the petrol down and replace it with 97 Ron petrol, cant see why as it states quiet clearly in the hand book 95 Ron it also states that on the inside off the petrol cap. I will play there game for a while, but as suggested I will formally reject the car after three attempts to fix the problem this is consumer law as I understand it.

Thanks again more ideas are welcome

So what is the current status?

I'll try to describe it better. Imagine a noisy powered steering pump you get on a pug307 or the noise the new minis seem to make, again powered steering i believe. Only on first startup from cold for a second max. Like the oil getting to the top.

Got a video on my iphone. Only normally use photobucket and it won't upload. Can someone recommend an app so i can put it on here please?

How about uploading it to YouTube and copy a link here

Snet with speeling mistkaes from my phoen

Sussed it, i think?!

Let me know if it plays. Remember i had to do this alone from the drivers door lol

Exactly the same noise mine makes and always has.

it plays.  not sure what the noise is.  it sounds familiar and not a worrying sound but I've not noticed mine do it every start.  but then I don't often have the door and bonnet open as I start up. i'm intrigued now.

Cheers, puts my mind at ease.

Very interesting, but nothing to do with the OP's noise on the 700 mile old car has it?

Not at all. His sounded far more serious from the description... Are we not waiting to hear what the dealer thinks?

If the dealer suspects that bad fuel may be causing a dramatic engine knock, they should at least drain the tank and refill it to try and avoid damage to the engine. If the knock goes away, they charge you for the repair and you go to the fuel seller for compensation.

Its not every start. Only initial start up when cold. As in first start of the day.

Doesn't sound like a concern to me , likely the tappets rattling as they fill with oil , this drains over time so always worse overnight or after long periods , even worse if you park in a garage as the noise bounces back at you
