2015 VRS Petrol engine knocking sound from engine on cold start

Featured Replies

Hi All

just wondering if anybody with a 2015 VRS Petrol 2.0 has this problem. from a cold start the engine has a loud knocking sound

it sounds really bad, it is not the sound generator it is a totally different sound to that, then as the engine warms up the sound becomes less but is still there in the back ground, performance seem O>K. but the car has only covered 700 miles from new, and the dealer has admitted there is a problem they still have the car as I write but said they have never heard such a noise, and they have know idea what to do next. As you can imagine I am less than pleased at that comment.

Have searched this forum and there are some comments about the Turbo waste gate valve playing up which may cause this issue

any thought guys. It would be great if this forum could solve this mystery. and put Skoda tecks to shame.

Any thoughts much appreciated

Cheers

Sounds like one of the piston bearings is shot. (big end or little end will depend on how the knock sounded)

Of course, it could be something less serious but that's my initial thoughts based on your description

Welcome to the forum.

Is the knocking there on start up before the car even moves?

If it is on start up and tick over then Turbo Wastegate should have no effect on a Knocking noise.

Be sure to not accept the car back until it is properly diagnosed and the proper repair carried out,

and if there is a Build Fault,  just reject it right off and let Skoda UK CS get you a new car.

No point starting ownership with a bad one from the off.

Let Skoda get it back and you get one of merchantable quality.

Without hearing its hard to know but with your description it does sound like a big end issue as Greg suggests. Why it has this issue is a worry as its normally due to oil pressure loss and this would damage other parts. Although it could be nothing as serious

Perhaps the timing belt has jumped a tooth or was installed incorrectly to begin with? This would create some horrible noises but I would expect an EPC warning light for anything major. It could just be a rattly manifold housing, or someone leaving a spanner under the engine cover.

With the lid open where does it seem the noise is coming from?

If it turns out to be engine failure, you will be within your right's to reject the car and request a new replacement. Hopefully it is nothing serious.

Would have thought full engine swap would be relatively easy and quicker than getting a new car. Only problem then is the engine number change on the registration document.

But a new a car would probably make you feel happier once it arrived. They would need to provide a courtesy car. And there would be no depreciation over this period.

Actually Skoda UK Dealers & Customer Services are replacing Like for Like engines and not Changing the VIN or Informing

the DVLA.  but saying that is OK, which it is not actually.

A Replacement Engine has a VIN (Engine Number) off the Line, and is not Blank waiting to be Stamped as it travels internationally.

& as for a new engine after 700 miles,  front off the car etc.

Skoda need to then do their usual, and punt the lemons back into the Trade with Engines with Numbers that do not

match the VIN & have not been changed on the DVLA Data Base.

They say their Computer Records show the Information?

The ea888 engine has a chain not a belt but this could jump. Normally results in bent things and poor to no running. I've seen a few cara jump one tooth and had just a lack of power but nothing bent, some cars will even get away with even more.

Here's a link to a video of a BMW with big end problems

318Ci Big End Knock:

I would have thought a big end issue would get worse as the engine oil warmed up, not better.

Thanks one and all for all the quick reply's

here is more detail on this

When you start from cold the engine sounds O.K. when it is ticking  over there is a slight ticking which I am lead to believe is normal for this engine

But as soon as you drive away under medium throttle there is a distinct banging noise it sounds as if it is coming from just behind the fire wall fairly high up hence my question about the waste gate, as I am sure you all know the Turbo on the 2015 VRS is indeed just behind the bulkhead, I am sorry I am not able to open the bonnet and listen due to the fact the car has to be moving.

Heard from the dealers today, and they want me to take the car back run the petrol down and replace it with 97 Ron petrol, cant see why as it states quiet clearly in the hand book 95 Ron it also states that on the inside off the petrol cap. I will play there game for a while, but as suggested I will formally reject the car after three attempts to fix the problem this is consumer law as I understand it.

Thanks again more ideas are welcome

Happy driving

Perhaps they suspect dodgy fuel that the engine can't manage, 97 rather than decent 95 fuel may just help the ECU tuning to recover more obviously and quickly?

The waste gate only operates at higher revs ( it caps the boost pressure when otherwise the energy in the exhaust flow could generate higher inlet pressure than the engine can manage).

What happens if the engine is reved when out of gear?  I'm wondering if the noise is drive train rather than engine.

Stuff running on UK Superunleaded 97 RON Minimum from Sainsbury, Esso, or BP,

they love 99 ron Minimum Tesco Momentum or Shell V-Power Nitro.

They might run on Unleaded 95 ron but its like buying Running Shoes and taking out the laces.

................

If everything in life was as reliable as a Golf.

Or maybe the VWG could get their act together and play the same tune.

3 Attempt to fix when the car was delivered properly built.

But if from the off there is a Major Engine built issue, then the Letter needs to go to

Alasdair Stewart Brand Director Skoda UK. He is the boss.

because when he was part of Bentley with responsibility for After Sales & Warranties, their customers expect better.

So any messing about by the dealer,

Call Skoda HQ CS in MK and get your Case Handler, and Written Statement off to Alasdair Stewart so that you do not

get treated as they have been doing with others that have covered more miles than you.

That's an old spec from the GTI mk5. GTI mk7's and VRS's are specified run fine on 95 RON and above. 95 RON is the minimum spec that these engines are 100% guaranteed to run safe on.

Some of my old cars required 100 RON minimum, and would run like dogs if fed anything less. Never had any issues with my VRS on 95 RON and I notice no difference feeding it 99 RON. If I was doing a track day I'd fill it with Super as a precaution but for road use its a placebo. VAG engines do not run off the knock sensor, so RON >95 does next to nothing. Your warranty is as safe running 95 RON as it is running 99.

All EU Type Approved engines are required to run on 95 ron.

But its often crap, and as we are seeing, some cars are running like crap on some crap fuel.

If you notice no difference then good,

if you notice the shorter life of the plugs from the Service Schedule / Guidelines and Misfires but not logged,

then the 5 Pence a Litre more for Momentum might be well worth it. £2.50 Extra on 50 litres.

Its a free world and if the cheaper fuel is your choice then that is lovely.

Replacement  if not identified and or cured in one week! Simples!

Each to his own. There are other threads on here singing the merits (or not) of Super unleaded. My own VRS exhibits no difference that I can percieve, it will be handed back to the dealer after the PCP term ends, and I have 3 years free servicing. Paying £150-£200 extra for fuel each year seems like a waste to me, but I am sure lots of others feel different.

Whatever OP's problems, 95 RON fuel has not caused them after 700 miles.

No you would not expect it to be an issue, but the dealership technicians apparently are checking out the fuel, reason being, it'd not unusual as tom Jones sang.

Just to jump on this. My tsi vrs makes a high pitch noise like a dry starter on startup when cold for about half a second and then settles out and quitens down immediately like a sewing machine. I presume this is normal? Done it from new, now still only 260 miles.

No, that's not normal.

My TSI VRS does the same noise since new, now 5000Km. Anyone else?

Yep, it's normal. There's another thread covering covering the cold-start squeal trait somewhere on here. Also affects other VAG TSI engines.

Well I guess mine is garaged and hadn't got cold enough to cry for mummy yet then.  No doubt the noise will still be disturbing when I here it
