Fuel filter leak

Featured Replies

Got my car out of the garage Tuesday having had a full service cam belt kit and all the filters changed.

Last night I noticed a smell of diesel and after 180 miles down the motorway the smell was unbearable so popped the bonnet and the fuel filter has been literally spurting diesel all over my engine.

Popping into a garage in Chiswick they established the garage had used the wrong seal? On the fuel filter and 15 minutes later and a new filter and seal its fine.

Is it worth going back to the garage or not about it, not fussed about it not being in properly mistakes happen just glad I spotted it now. But can this diesel everywhere cause any issues with my car?

Cheers

On one change of the filter the o-ring got damaged and diesel started to por out, maybe not as much as yours.

Can happen, but wrong seal, doesn't the seal come with the filter?

A bit of hand dish washing detergent and water, excellent to clean engine area without being aggressive as some cleaning products may do

Hope it never covered your new Cambelt, might be worth making them aware of the issue in case the worse happens.

I thought so as well with the filter but the one the garage had from skoda (well jct600 parts) had a different size seal, was a bit thicker.

Ca belt was dry on initial inspection but it could have got covered when driving. I'll make them aware in case I get issues but so far all seems good.

Alternators and diesel don't get on together, the diesel removes the insulation lacquer on the wires if prolonged exposure.

If you had/could get confirmation of the problem and how it was generated from the garage that fixed your car after the leak started.

You could then approach the service garage and ask them for some sort of compensation against the second garage bill ??

I had a large diesel leak on my van and within a couple of weeks the alternator and air con belts both gave up the ghost. Thankfully my van has a chain not a belt.

I'm gonna head in tommorow to the garage who did the service. I can confirm Mike the seal was different as I saw them told the old out and put a new one in.

I'll explain I'm not happy and see what gets said

I think I'd have to agree with Mike, whilst not immediately apparent I would feel like I was living with a ticking time bomb. More do than if I had never had the Cambelt changed at all.

If it helps estimate how much diesel I lost I've used a quarter more of a tank than I normally would have on my weekend trip... Ouch

It was the black O ring type of seal. There was a noticeable difference in width of the seal rubber. Meant to get a photo but was in a hurry as was Inbetween jobs getting it fixed

No smell of diesel at all now.

Heating and AC smell fine too. It (nearly wrote she...) has had a decent wash tonight at work. I think the garage jetted the engine out though.
