Featured Replies

Hello all .

. When reved from idle cold the engine cuts out . It spins over as tho not much compression then fires one one or two cylinders runs lumpy then clears and runs fine as it clears it smokes like unbernt diesel for a second then fine . After that itl rev fine seems like its only when cold hasent done it when engines warm .its only now and again its done it ..havent checked for fault codes yet but its next on my list ? Anything spring to mind

Cheers Jim

Coolant temp sensor failure would be my first suspect.

Timing? When was the timing belt last changed?

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk

Mine was slow to start, clouds of unburnt fuel then started on two or three cylinders before the other(s) kicked a couple of seconds later. It had new glow plugs and temp sensor but no change. Always started perfectly though at very low outside temps like -10C or when warm.

Fixed by having the timing adjusted slightly using software similar to VCDS.

I get the timing checked with VCDS had the same with my ASV once or twice when I had the belt changed they checked the timing and it was out. Hope that helps?

Yeah agreed,  if it's a been along time since the last timing belt change I would get it on VCDS to check the timing/synchro angle, & while you're at it have a look to see what teh ECU is getting from the CTS .

Its had a belt change not long before I got it . Is it a vag com job to alter the timeing? . If the timeing was out wouldent it falter every time ?

You use VCDS to check the timing. To adjust it you slacken the three bolts on the injection pump pulley and move the pump a tiny amount.

If the timing is too retarded then cold starting is normally crap.

I haven't had the car on the road yet but a drive up the lane it seems ok plenty power .its noisier than my 1.9tdi polo but that's supposed to be the norm with these .

It starts spot on every time , no smoke or rattles or ticks .

Look it up on the Ross tech website. It shows the timing on a graph with lines showing the upper and lower limits. I would aim for just under the top line.

The adjustments on the pump only need to be small to make a big difference to the timing.

My mate had a look at the car today wile I was at work and said at 900 rpm its at 2.5 - 3 degrees ? I think I need to look at it wile he's pluged in to better understand it .got a cts coming from dealer .its got a green one fitted but don't know if its gen or not so just going to replace it .jim

Old CTS were black, and the newer ones are green.  Glad to hear you have a CTS from a dealer, as ebay ones have a tendency to be rubbish :-(

Yeah coming on Monday .£37 plus or including vodka and tonic cant remember witch . The cheep tow cars slowly geting more expensive .going to recheck the timeing next week with vcds again go through it with my mate this time see if we can get abetter reading

The ross tech vid says aim for the blue line in the middle oh the graph ? Is this best or where best to get best power?

Temp senders in just gota see what its like tomorrow . Any one got any advice on the timeing where's best for best power on stock engine ? Or is it best to be as close to center line as poss?

Jim

I would aim for 1/2 way between the middle and top lines.

Ok cool. Just to learn what's the reasoning of moveing it there. I'm guessing that's slightly advanceing the pump .
