1.2 12v AZQ - Down on power

I'm going to stop thinking about it until I hear back. Probably ECU related.

A few reasons I think this...

The radio was half hanging out with the wires all over. The person I got it off said he wanted to keep it but couldn't get it out (those two simple plugs on the back)

I can see a live wire direct from the battery to the boot, so must have had a sub and amp that's been removed, possibly earthed them together and made quite a spark.

I plugged a factory radio in which has no power going to it, I checked every fuse and all ok, so may be ECU related as well?

I havnt checked any bulbs yet, but when I put the sidelights on, the foglight symbol comes on the dash.

They could all be related to a faulty ecu, but could be simple fixes...

Factory radios have to be coded to the ecu, a random radio won't work. Are you sure about the foglight symbol, iirc there is a lamp type symbol that comes on with sidelights but I may be wrong.

Last time I looked there were a fair no of azq injectors for sale on eBay for peanuts. They are easy to change.

Careful which ECU you're thinking about hutchy, the engine ECU isn't at all involved in lights or radio function, to the best of my knowledge.

Are you sure the light switch isn't pulled out one click, resulting in the foglight(s) actually being on (or is that only when in the dipped beam, two-clicks clockwise position? can't remember).

Really hope they find something simple and cheap for you tomorrow!

I have the code for the radio. It literally has no power to it at all, doesn't even switch on.

It could be any ECU if he's earthed the positive of the battery somewhere, could have damaged them. All just thinking of ideas though.

I've just tried another throttle body since I got one cheap, made no difference. However....

I do now have a fault code relating to manifold pressure. Doesn't put any lights on the dash but if I put the computer on and read faults it comes up.

Really hope I havnt had four duff map sensors :D wiring looks ok but havnt went Into much depth of pulling tape and covers off them all.

Edit: fog light was the wrong bulb forced into the housing.

Radio is working ok now but the ignition has to be switched on, must have to add another live rather just the ignition live.

News?

  • Author

Dropped it off at half 9 this morning. Wanted to let the trafic calm down a little bit since I knew there was a few hills and I'd hold up trafic.

It's about a 5 mile drive and expected some change, maybe a management light on the dash but nothing.

I've heard nothing from them also, don't want to pester them much but will phone tomorrow dinner time before the long bank holiday weekend.

Day two: phoned them up today for any news. They just said its a problematic one and would phone me when they know more.

Can't wait to find out what this turns out to be

  • Author

That makes at least four of us :D

I expect news around Thursday next week... Taking into account bank holidays, early finishes and hungover workers.

So... An update!

I phoned them yesterday so ask what's going on since its been a week, I wasn't expecting anything huge being a bank holiday weekend but they said its a problematic one so no news at all.

They have phoned this morning to say they think the cat is by blocked. They said they took the lambda sensor out and it's improved massively.

I said I had done the same thing, as well as slacken the manifold of and it was exactly the same. They said they will fit a new cat and go from there.

Fingers crossed a new cat fixes it.

I told you to try and look through that, to see! :D  Maybe I didn't explain it well.

Good news that they/you might be on the way to sorting it. :sun:

Been following this. Glad it sounds like they have found the problem, Hutchy

No no you explained well, I knew what you meant, I just thought by removing the lambda sensor and trying it, and it still being the same, I ruled it out. I also put a torch in to have a quick look and seemed ok, I could see the honeycomb shape well.

I also went to the back of the exhaust and got someone to rev it and the flow hitting my hand felt good.

I could have done more, but I had to stop at some point.

Hopefully find out in a few hours or tomorrow if she's driving well!

They have said they are 100% sure it's blocked cat, but have said they don't have time to fit a new one.

I'm picking it up tomorrow morning, and getting a new cat and flexi pipe from euro.

Believe it or not, I've got a spare 2nd hand genuine cat I could send/lend you, but apart from being able to see through it easily, I really don't know how well it might work at catalysing. And you'd have to find another good genuine one to send back if it works and you want to leave it on. Think about it.

Sent you a message anyway just to clarify a few things.

Will find out tomorrow morning I suppose! Will be about £100 for a new one from euro.

Wow! You have basically the same problems that I have been having.

Mine goes fine then goes into limp mode and misfires (mine Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP 2006 64bhp BME) and was playing up when my brother took it for a short run yesterday. So mines gone into the garage now and they have sent the injector away to a special garage place to clean and test it. They have said that they are going to repair it if they can. However I will have to pay for a new part if they say its had it. :(

Hi I have a fabia vrs 2005 and it has a pd170 turbo egr delete and a remap is there and more mods to get it a lot faster

^ Random :D

You don't have to pay for a new part, that'll cost a fortune if a garage buys it (please ask them how much they'd charge to supply and fit, before they go ahead and buy it). For example, Eurocarparts want £140 for a new one for my '05 AZQ at the moment, and although a garage will get a better price than that from them, they'll mark it back up to that sort of price by the time you get the bill. (And ECP website shows a picture of the wrong type for our car when searched by registration number, BTW. It's often a gamble with them.)

There are brand new genuine ones of both types on ebay at (relative) bargain prices. Have you checked which type you need yet?

This one if it's the green band type. This one if it's the red marked one. This one's an even cheaper red-marked one and claims to be genuine too, but my gut feeling is that yours are likely to be the green band ones.

I'd still go for secondhand (e.g. this one) if it was my car, but it's up to you.

  • Author

I would also just try a second hand injector.

I take it the basic things like a compression test has been carried out?

Wino, Maybe?? (dom't know)

hutchysrs50, Compression test hasn't been carried out yet I don't think. The three injector have been sent to another garage for them to check them out and they will evaluate what the best steps are going to be from there. They have said that they are going to try and repair them but if they can't I will have to probably get some new/second hand ones.

Thank you for your post you two :)

What happened about this, was it a blocked cat?

  • Author

Was a range of faults really.

The timing chain had failed and jumped two teeth.

Valve guides had failed so was burning oil.

Because of the burning oil, the cat was blocked and once all the new valves and valve guides had been put in, it was running to much power to get rid of all the gasses so running crappy with the blocked cat.

All sorted now.
