oil light coming on and staying on...please help

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a very cheap 2001 fabia 1.4 mpi.The  oil pressure light is coming on after about ten minutes driving.

I have read here that it could be the oil pressure sensor so ive ordered a new one.I was wondering where the sensor is located

on my car and also would this be the main reason the light is coming on ? I also have the added trouble as of a few days ago of

the engine management light coming on? it doesn't go out either. I am worried that i might have head gasket trouble too as i think there might be a coolant leak

from the gasket area. Can this be? I have plenty of engine oil and there doesn't seem to be any mayonnaise under the engine cap or dipstick. The car sounds and runs

fine though despite the christmas tree dashboard. Is there any chance these two lights are linked?

For the oil pressure switch look here. Often you can tell the switch is broken because when you unplug the electrical connector, oil emerges. It shouldn't.

Headgasket problems often seem to cause residual pressure in the coolant expansion tank after the engine has cooled down to stone cold.  Try removing the cap first thing in the morning before starting the car, and see if you get a hiss of escaping gas.

Fault light unlikely to be related to oil pressure light, but might give some clues about other issues if you can get the code(s) read.

Is there any chance these two lights are linked?

No, replace the oil sender then go from there.

Hi Guys,

thanks very much for all your input. Your information has worked wonders.

I replaced the sender and sure enough the oil light went out :))

Just the engine management light now to fix. I notice also my power steering fluid needs replacing or is very low. Would this have

something to do with the engine light? I will check in the morning as you suggested Wino for any gas pressure in coolant tank. I have a

funny feeling there is. If it is head gasket trouble would that gasket sealing liquid solve my problems? I have tried every trick in the book

to reset the light but sadly hasn't worked. I will bring it to a garage and try to get it reset on the computer if it can be but i suppose it all

in vein if the gasket is leaking coolant I need to book it in for its car test but obviously it will fail with the engine light on.

Head gasket problems - try watching some telly , especially "THE GARAGE". Classic test for HG fail is the "Sniffer" test. Consists of tester containing sensitive liquid, which changes colour in the presence of exhaust gases in   coolant. Proper diagnoses is a lot of times cheaper than guess and replace.

Thanks VWD,

A stroke of luck. My engine light went out. I did what you said Wino and opened the coolant bottle in the morning and it had a hissing sound and some coolant came out. 20 miles later the light went out. So no more lights apart from the power steering light which comes on intermittently as i need topping up or replacing.

Did i put to much coolant  in? quite possible.

Anyway im of for my NCT tomorrow morning.. I hope it gets through.

Wish me luck ;/

BTW there still could be a head gasket problem or the beginnings of one...
