8500 Miles "Oil Change Due in 500 Miles" Showing up

Featured Replies

As above really, my rapid has done just over 8500 miles but the change oil display thing which pops up in front of me is saying to change the oil in 500 miles? Should I get booked in for a service or wait until 10,000 miles? I feel like i'm being done out of 1000 miles here!! haha

Anybody else experienced the same thing?

Your lucky, mine asked for an oil change after only a few hundred miles from new (not set correctly on PDI apparently)  :D

However ours reached 9k before asking for a service, stating 800 miles to go. So factoring in the early reset that's slightly more mileage than with yours and I've booked it in for the end of April; by then it will be at 10k with careful juggling of car usage between Spaceback and Fabia.

Have you owned the car from new? If not, I'd get it done sooner rather than later.

If you've had it from new, over what space of time have you clocked those miles up in?

Just remember, a turbo will last longer with frequent oil changes, so don't skimp on the service schedules (and it will never hurt to service early or over-service). I'm having the oil changed in mine every 5,000 miles.

Isn't it also because the service interval is 15,000km which is 9320 miles?

I've owned the car since new, beginning of July 2014, so 9 months now.

I might do like The Plumber has done and get it booked in for end of April as I will be almost reaching 10,000 miles by then.

I will never actually own the car as its PCP deal so I'm only really servicing as and when I need too.

  • 2 weeks later...

My Roomie has variable servicing and has done 8000k in 18 months. Engines and oils have improved immensely over the past decade. Engines are made to finer tolerances so no running in is really needed and oil changes are needed less frequently. My 1966 Vauxhall Viva was gently driven with a sump full of duckhams or Castrol every 3000 miles. After 80k miles the engine was smoking and I was driving around in a blue haze.

castrol edge long life is good for 18000 miles turbo or no turbo. That's why there is varible service long life oil. fixed service normal oil 10000 miles

Castrol Edge is decidedly average oil (not bad, but not brilliant either), and more often than not it isn't even the oil your dealer uses (they will be using an even cheaper bulk oil that confirms to the correct standard).

The correct Castrol Edge oil was in use when my last car suffered its double turbo failure (and that was serviced to schedule - every 12,500miles - it wasn't enough), the used, thick oil began to clog and narrow the turbo oil feed pipes and that played a major part in both turbo failures.

That's why I now oil change every 5,000 miles and why I recommend oil servicing at least every 10k, if not every 5k like me.

I suspected this type of bad experience was the cause of your keenness on oil changes.

As I also know to my cost, French cars are junk.

And looking back through my list, so are British ones.

Why did it take us both so long to (re)turn to VAG?

Indeed. Oil is relatively cheap. Engines and turbos are not.

I only have 1 service then trade in near the second to get another so oil changes does not bother me

Wow, That's a lot of depreciation to swallow if you change your car that often.

Not if it was 4k under list to start with :)
