Wrong road tax

Featured Replies

I believe that 1.2 tsi owners are being charged too much road tax. From the pictures of the engine on the Skoda website the photo of the engine appears to have the older ht lead carrier of the previous engine. I believe that the engine now installed in the Roomster is used in the Rapid and that carries a lower emissions band (road tax band). Any thoughts?

The rapid is shaped less like a bungalow though.

Sadly the tax people take into account the type of vehicle, and a Roomster is alegedly a MPV. I noticed the same with Reno about 6 years ago.

Given that road tax is calculated on how much CO2 is produced or at least how much the manufacture has officially declared there isn’t much you can do (I’ve had a go in the past with the MG).

Also as pointed out it’s not just the engine that is the factor but the shape of the car producing more drag and other factors such as the given engine map etc.

And the weight of the car too. Neither the 16" spacesaver spare wheel nor the panoramic sunroof are options on the Yeti Geenline II because either would push it into the next higher VED band.

Is it not calculated with the engine on the bench such as when they work out the fanciful mpg figures?

No. Its done with the car on a rolling road and some of simulation of drag.

I do not know how honest the figures are. Which? magazine published a comparison between the Focus and the Golf. The emissions taken by the Consumers Association was enough to place the Focus in a class above, to equal the Golf and not true to Ford figures. Someone is trying to pull the wool over the eyes

problem is there although the "route" is prescribed, ie the speeds, acceleration, braking etc, the temperatures for the tests are not, so some tests are run at quite high ambient temperatures which mean quicker warm up and more efficient engine stats

they also favour cars with stop start as there are a number of idle sections where a stop start car would stop

Urban Cycle

The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20 to 30 degrees on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours.

Deg F or Deg C

I assume Deg C, in which case the difference in a cold and warm up times are quite significant

20 - 30 Deg C is not exactly a narrow temperature range

if a car was run then left for 3 hours in 30 deg C it is not exactly going to be a cold start

What a load of old bull, we the consumer have to put up with. So the ambient temperature is between 20° and 30° - that is a summer's day in the UK. My neighbour is disappointed that his new 1.0 Ecoboost Ford Fiesta is not doing the 95mpg as advertised - he is only managing the 40s

And to go back to the original point we are being taxed on this nonsense!

I see it as a positive. Because the tax is based on this unachievable figure we all pay less road tax, and a quick check at realmpg or similar lets you know what to actually expect from the vehicle. Unfortunately my Roomster is an F band, could not get anywhere with Skoda or DVLA as to why, both say it should be E but skoda won't provide a letter stating this and DVLA won't change it without the letter from Skoda, I suspect having a full size spare as factory option pushed it over from E.

Wife's Yaris 1.33 is £30 tax, due to its supposed stop start and economy. In reality it doesn't get near the published figures since it's used for town driving, but if it were based on real figures I'd probably be bumped into the 1.3 category which is £125. I'm happy for the savings I get due to the band calculated on the imaginary figures.

All roomies have Euro5 spec engines, Rapids have Euro6. No wonder Roomsters are being offered as special deals then!

I think they will not be able to sell euro 5 cars in 1-2 years so hence could be the urgency to clear any old stock
