Rear Brake rubbing noise

Featured Replies

On a short drive yesterday morning I started hearing a rubbing (rather than grinding) noise when applying the brake fully. Strangely the noise seemed to have stopped when I was driving later in the day, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas what could have caused it?

Also what is the usual cost of replacing the rear brakes (disc & pads etc) On a mk1 octavia estate?

Thanks for your help everyone

Rusty rear discs, usual thing with Skoda, I change my rear Discs and Pads every 2 - 3 years, cheap DIY job..

You will also need a tool called a caliper rewind tool to press the brake caliper back into it's housing at the sametime it rotates slowly.

Application of foot-brake just scrapes rusty bits off, hence noise disappears..

As above, mine were in a bit of a state, handbrake was sticking on a bit when left overnight, put this down to the sticky surficial rust and I was right as it turns out. Did my discs and pads all round the other day, I only have basic skills but managed it. On the front you'll probably need to remove the carrier (be prepared for some stiff bolts) to fit the new disk with its extra width, and don't forget to hang up the calipers when you remove them to support the weight and avoid damaging the brake lines. Get some penetrating fluid for your bolts and copper grease for your disc retaining screws, back of the pads and the clips and sliders and you're good to go. Also take off fluid reservoir cap, will make winding back pistons easier, put plenty of rag round top to catch any drips. It will take a while on the driveway but a garage will charge at least an hour so the pain is well worth it! It's fairly straightforward, just time consuming really. There's some good guides around on here and on you tube.

Oh sorry you're just doing the rear, makes life a bit easier! Don't think you'll need to remove the carriers, disc should just squeeze in.
