DIY front hub replacement

Featured Replies

Folks, in a bid to trace my ABS fault, I'm going to start by replacing the hub (before moving onto the sensor and the wiring if necessary) - which I am 98% certain is the cause of the problem.

Looking at it, I'm thinking that the grease cap needs to come off, the big bolt inside needs to be undone, then the disc/caliper assembly needs to come off. There are 4 bolts on the inside face that need to be removed and then in should all come apart.

Is there anything I need to be aware of? Like do I need to loosen the big bolt through the centre bore of the wheel (with the wheel on the ground) to stop the hub turning? What do I need to grease when it goes back together?

Cheers

First thing I looked at this morning, just wanted to find out if any members here had any direct experience of doing this job.

I read on one post that you need the mother of all breaker bars and a fat friend to jump up and down upon it at the right time to get the central triple hex undone.

I was thinking of taking an air impact driver to that bolt. Hopefully a new bearing will solve the problem.

Having only a Fabia I took the car to the garage for O/S front hub bearings be replaced, a heavy press is required to press-out the old bearing and press-in the new bearing.

Damage can be caused getting the new bearings-in if a heavy press is not used, (so the garage man said)?

Rear hub assembly a real doodle, just undo centre bolt, slip off complete assembly, (puller not needed) slip-on new hub assembly, torque centre bolt up, job done..

I think (and I'm not 100%) but on the 1K/1Z platform, the hub and bearing comes as an assembly, removed by unbolting it and replacing with another.

Yep hub and bearing all one unit. Just replaced a rear on mine. I wouldn't recommend using an impact gun either, certainly not for doing it back up. Don't imagine it would do the new bearing much good.

I've had to do a rear (or rather paid someone else) wondered if the front was the same but am inclined to go with it.

Blimey this is a DIY job if you've got a 2 post lift and an air gun. Fortunately I know a man who does.

Getting hold of the right part was harder than doing the flipping job but it's done.
