Wales - A4069 Brynamman to Llandovery

Featured Replies

Description:

This is a fantastic driving road in the heart of the Welsh Black Mountains which Top Gear have used for filming the features for the Focus RS and the BMW 1 series!

The A4069 starts off with a gentle drive going through Brynamman and then Upper Brynamman, a typical old Welsh village with narrow streets but it soon opens out to one of the best driving roads in Wales!

The road soon starts off with a small straight followed by several tight off-camber twisty corners, followed by more short straights.

You need 101% concentration as some of the corners come out of nowhere, its almost caught me out a couple times and i've driven this road several times!

The scenery is fantastic with several of the Black mountains peaking at 500 metres, just as the adrenalin starts kicking in the road gets even better as you start going downhill.

**Be warned** as you start coming downhill there is a tight hairpin with a very steep drop-off (150m) so don't mess this up!

Just down the road from the hairpin you approach a bridge crossing one of the many small streams in this area, a favorite Top Gear filming point!

Just past this bridge the road starts to become less twisty and ends up in a very fast but bumpy straight where you could easily do double the speed limit, 60mph remember!

You'll soon want to turn around and drive it again, going the other way its like your driving a different road but just as awesome.

This is an awesome driving road that requires high concentration, but please be vigilant of the sheep that could stroll onto the road!

We do this road on our driving meets and I have driven this road many times over the years and I think its worth also pointing out be careful and watch out for wild horses and sheep, also its a road used by many bikers and other cars having a blast as well as tourists who are driving very slow to enjoy the view.

I've driven this road a few times. I actually found it by accident. I find it's better going the other way from Llangadog to Brynamman is better even though it's mostly up hill.

The 'Best road in Wales' as voted on Scoobynet in 2002, I've since driven it many times and incorporated it into many of my Scoobynet camping trips.

It's not the easiest road to drive, but great fun and the south end of it can be boring to get to, set as it is at the top of the valleys in mining villages.

Best done outside of the tourist and lambing seasons, a few car parks near the top, but the drive up or down the west side is the best IMHO. SouthEast side is more open, but tight corners with rocks just off-line means it needs concentration.

The hairpin on the West side is a classic Top Gear/ EVO photo-shoot location you may well recognise..
