"Funny"/"worrying" engine-related noise - turbo, aircon or what?

Don't think it is - my "noise" appears to occasionally happen when the engine has been running for some time and is pretty warm.

Someone else may have some ideas about your engine issue (I know nothing about the 1.4TSI !) - but you might get more responses if you started a separate thread with the engine type in the Title.

ok. pm me if you want me to delete my messages - i don't want to hijack your thread.

Don't think you need to do that - just post the suggested new thread :D

Wonkey, Sounds like your timing chain might be rattling

best get it looked at.

Duh - might have been that if the engine had a chain - but it has a cambelt! :D

thankfully it turned out to be the fuel pipes rattling against the bulkhead into the passenger compartment. Now fixed with foam. Amazing what it sounded like originally though.

Sorry, thought the chain comment was directly to myself - only just re-read and realised that it was to wonky !!

As for my original problem, now done another couple of hundred miles, including 100 reasonably fast up the M40 & M42, and then another 60 or so around the Worcester area - with absolutely no sign of the "noise" and so I'm still mystified as to what it was!

However, it did occur to me that the original "noise" happened after a run down a country back road, and so I'm wondering if a small stone might have been thrown up into the area of the serpentine belt, and the noise was that stone being bounced around until it got thrown out, or just fell out?

And now another 500 miles during a few days away in the Midlands, and no "noises" like those described  - so, whilst the problem cannot be said to be "solved", it does seem like it has gone away permanently (I really hope!)
