1997 felicia more acceleration

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 1997 1.3 Skoda Felicia and was wondering how I could get some more acceleration from it? Don't want to do an engine conversion just yet but as most people with 1.3 fellys there's not much power with acceleration. Cheers

The only thing that comes to my mind right now is weight reduction. Just empty the boot from everything including the spare wheel, tools kit and remove the rear seats (Very easy Job). If you're in need for even more acceleration, get rid of the passenger's seat too, the floor mats and carpets, door cards, radio and rear parcel shelf.

talbotron3000,

You can't squeeze more power from the stock engine, maybe very marginal increase (<1%) by doing a total maintenance tuneup. Between that and an engine swap, there is only a visit to a machine shop to mess with the head, valves, camshaft, etc. or installing a turbo. Chiptuning is not possible afaik.

Cheers for the comment guys! Turbo could be a shout. Do they do turbo kits for 1.3's?

Try decatting it... my 1.6 with head skimmed decat custom stainless straight through to back box exaust and pipercross panel and drilled box would beat any think off the lights and that only had 75bhp

Why would you advise him to do two illegal things?

Not sure. But maybe TeflonTom will write a guide about it, since it is a question often asked by owners of Felicia 1.3.

I throw in a document showing how a Polish guy did it.

As an engineering boffin, and seasoned scrapheap surfer, personally i would probably be able to convert it to turbo for less than £200. Would it be worth it? No.. would it last long? No..

my best advice is either change the engine or buy a faster car. I know that sounds blunt but there are so many reasons why a felicia wont be a fast car, i have fitted a big engine to mine whjch gas enough power to scare the bigger boys out there, the steering and brakes and suspension are not up to it in a standard car.

I honestly don't know about real life tuning engines for highest performance since I don't have the tools and resources. But I am curious about it.

What power/torque would you expect from a 1.3 turbo? Just for the sake of numbers.

Why wouldn't last? Because of low budget?

And last question: is it possible to learn something from Lancia Delta Integrale? They look strikingly similar chassis wise and yet they managed 215 HP. I know it's 4WD..

Turbocharging isnt necessarily about performance, it can be just for increased efficiency, but this young lad is after the big whooshing followed by the big hissing, which is great fun, turbocharged engines have a much wider usable power band, and the power is free because it is scavenged from the waste exhaust gasses, i would expect to be able to increase the output of a fuel injected engine by 50% upwards, but it does depend largely on getting the correct quantity of fuel in pkus adjusting the ignition timing to suit the boost pressure, also the thermal loads are massive so proper heat management is a must, aside from that there is the headache of packaging the components into the available space and the extra plumbing and hoses.
