Turbo blown - worth repairing?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Turbo went this morning in spectacular fashion (dual carriageway, smoked out for about 2 miles behind me!).

I'm in two minds whether or not it's worth repairing - 05 plate, BLT engine 80,000 miles, tatty body - given that the car would only be worth £2500 on a good day...

Unless someone knows of somewhere I can get a bonkers cheap (but working) turbo?

Poor Fabia, I've had almost 9 years of pretty much trouble free motoring with it...

On the plus side, if I don't repair it I've seen a couple of nice Yeti's...

Cheers!

Can pick up decent second hand turbo for pennies these days, be a shame to get rid of it after 9 years troube free,

I'd say if you can pick up a pd150 turbo second hand or even a garret 130 you could have it on the road for £400 easily (if you do the work yourself)

Sure I seen some selling one last night in parts section.

Redcupraboy selling one.

Thanks guys.

I wouldn't be doing the work myself due to inablilty - I've got a friendly mechanic who would do it cheap-ish.

As for the second hand turbos, is it worth risking it with a second hand one? The odds are fairly high (IMHO) of it going again... Plus, I don't know what, if any, damage has been done by the turbo going and me having to drive on it for another 2 miles...

I've got to get it trailored out the yard at work to the mechanic yet, that's going to be fun as well...

I was in the same predicament I've had my fabia for 5 years and pretty much trouble free other than a few hiccups, I was going to sell it but the Mrs couldn't get on with the new car so bought myself a pd150 hybrid, a new front mount inter cooler and a few other bits and stuck it in vagtech going to cost about £2000 in total and I know I'll never get it back but hey I can't see me selling it in the next 4-5 years now, it's all down to you and how much you like the car, my turbo cracked of the manifold and the shrapnel was in the inter cooler, the maf pipe and all around the bottom intercooler pipes. Will it be worth it I'm not sure should get the car back today and will contact fabooka to remap it again then we will see, a lot of people will think in crazy spending £2000 on a car that's probably worth about £3k bt as long as I'm happy that's all that matters

Thanks guys.

I do indeed have a low mileage great condition BLT Fabia turbo for sale in the for sale section. PM me if your interested.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. The amount of people that think why spend x on this part or y is unbelievable. I look at it as long as I still like the car, the way it drives, handles and performs then the money is well worth spending IMO.

To original poster check the parts for sale thread as their is always something going relatively cheaply and your car will last another 80k if looked after.

I've decided...

I've used it as an excuse to get a bigger family car now, and have sold it locally as it sits for £1000.

Going and (hopefully) getting a Yeti this evening...

Someone's got a bargain. Good luck with the new car :)

Yep, put the deposit down on the Yeti. It's not as quick or fun as the Fabia was, but I can fit the whole family in it without squeals of complaint.
