Rear tyres hitting the inside of the wings?

Featured Replies

Hi

Just put the 16" alloys on mi car and drove with it yesterday and everything was fine but this morning when i drove it again i heard sound like when the tyres hitting the inside of the wings. That sound was coming from rear axis. Tyres are 205/55 R16 on all 4 wheels. Front is looking that the tyres do have plenty room but rear one are quite low.

Alloys are original Skoda Octavia L&K model 16"

I looked underneath the car but can see anything wrong with it. Didnt lifted the car up but just lied down on the ground and looked under the car.

I still have 4 old steel wheels with tyres in the boot but tyres are not that heavy so the car will be that low...

Any suggestions please.

Manny thanks

That looks a bit low on the rear with 16's on I'd check your rear springs aren't snapped?

I've got 17's on mine with no issues at all.

Yup it is the rear spring. I have lied down under the car and the top end of the spring has snapped and fallen inside the spring together with that piece of rubber that is usually on top of the spring.

It must have been cracked (half of the spring is rusted other half freshly broken) in the past but was holding together until the mechanic dropped the car rapidly on the wheels when changed them. Is it difficult to replace it? Can i do it mi self on car park? And what everything do i need to do it?

Manny Thanks

As long as your mechanically minded it's quite an easy job as long as you have axle stands and a trolley jack. If you don't or are anyway not confident then take it to a garage. Better to be safe than sorry.

I should be mechanically minded i managed to replace the clutch on mi own on the car park in the past.

I have the stands but mi trolley jack has broken down so will use just the jack that came with the car.

Thanks a lot for the advice.

Appreciate it.

P.S. Should i replace the springs on booth sides? Will the older one not be a bit lower after years of use?

Always replace both together. You will need s trolley jack for lowering the rear axle.

Yes that bit of rust...i just love it as it is...

Glad it's all sorted. Mines rusted in exactly the same place. I think it gives character lol.

Be getting the welder out before long!

Rubbed it back and touched it up and treated it.
