HELP! Can anyone diagnose this strange engine noise!

Featured Replies

Please see this video (link below) which records the strange noise.

The noise seems to happen on and off when the car is just ticking over. The noise stops when accelerating and the car performs as normal.

Any comments welcome.

Your dual mass flywheel is trying to escape your gearbox.

Mine was doing that most mornings from cold and I would agree with you 100% it sounds like the dmf however since changing the dog bone to a powerflex red one it has not done it once?? I still reckon it was the dmf BUT its been quiet for a couple of months now...co-incidence? I just dont know??

It's possibly got so bad it's locked in position, it happens. Just means when it works loose again, which it will, it's gonna be worse.

How long it been going on? If you have some ramps or good set of jacks. I would get underneath asap. The dogbone mount is easy to remove and you will be able to rock the engine to see what play is in bush.

But think its gbox area

Many thanks for people's posts. Most useful. Any ideas what the typical cost of a replacement dual mass flywheel? She is booked in for Wednesday at the garage to get some answers. Many thanks again.

I get trade discount but as a rough guide for you

£200 for dual mass flywheel

£100 for clutch kit

£20 for sale cylinder

All the above are OEM Sachs ones, which the car leaves the factory with.

Labour expect around £150 as well.

Attached is a photo of the flywheel replaced today. Safe to say that indeed was the problem. One of the mechanics said it was the worst they'd seen.

Many thanks for people's post. Greatly appreciated.

Looks well used that!

You've been lucky, could have nearly been a gearbox as well!

Mines borked as well, not quite as bad sounding as your was. Can I be cheeky and ask how much you ended up paying please?

Damn! I can get the clutch changed on the Pulsar for less than that.
