Loose Brake Caliper

Featured Replies

Noticed another niggle.

If I reverse and brake quite hard, I can hear a click coming from the wheel area.

Would this indicate something loose on the brakes, a Caliper or something?

I doubt it would be a caliper as it would jiggle and rattle in either direction, but the possibilty is exists. Ive had the same noise of the click and found it was the brake pad itself just moving slightly. Double check if the tension springs are in.

Ok thanks. I'll get the dealer to look at that too.

Recall a Honda Civic my mother had making a noise like this when changing from reverse to forward or vice versa - turned out that you could get two very slightly different sized brake pads - maybe 5mm or so, and having the smaller one in the larger style calliper made a click or clunk depend how quickly you set off. Maybe the pads have worn a bit and are a tad loose.

As above, its slight pad movement within the caliper. Nothing to worry about but slightly disconcerting if you don't understand what it is.

The car has only done 1800 miles. It's booked in for Tuesday, but judging by responses doesn't appear to be a common fault.

Thanks for replies :)

5mm is a huge difference in size for a brake pad to vary. Pretty hard to see how anyone could mix pads with that amount of difference.

Lots of brake pads will shift slightly when braking after a change of direction. Worth getting it looked into if your worried though

Mine does the same. Pad moving in the caliper

My previous track spec Honda Civic had the upgraded Spoon calipers on the front. The pads moved in the callipers ever so slightly, like 1-2mm. It made no difference to braking performance on the track at all. Was still able to late brake into corners with rear inner wheel in the air. It was just annoying when reversing out of driveways and car parks, but it was just a slight "click". That's it.

The sound of a loose calliper is very obvious and noisy. Much louder and concerning to hear.

It's been in at the dealers today.

They confirmed it is the brake pad which is moving a little but completely within tolerance as set out by the manufacture!

So my question is, does every Octavia do this?!

Thanks, I guess for reassurance but does it bother you, or am I just being picky?!

Does a bit. But I know what it is now, so it's a minor annoyance. It's only slow speed braking whilst reversing that highlights it.

My car does that from day one. Covered 17000 kms.

Ok I'll leave it as it is then :)

Just to make things clear for anyone concerned about brake pad 'click'. It is not only normal, but to some degree desirable to have this small rotational movement of the brake pad. Brake pads needs to be free to move along the calliper guide rails, if they are too tight the pad can overheat as the brakes don't release properly. Anti rattle shims and or springs prevent pad rattle as you are driving, but when you brake going forward the pad slide lugs move against the calliper end stops. Then when you reverse, the pad rotates slightly in the opposite direction and the lugs click as they hit the calliper rear stop rail.

Of course, you did the right thing to have it checked out by the dealer, ANY concern about brakes, should ALWAYS be checked out.
