Whooshing noise on turbo power up vRS CR 58 plate

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have recently replaced the actuator for the turbo on my 58 plate vRS CR Octavia (128,000 miles, CEGA 170) , this seemed to fix the turbo issues and all seemed hunky dory. Now 500 miles and a week later, I take it out and as you accelerate toward 2k+ revs there was a audible whooshing noise from engine, sounds like sucking not blowing (oo err missus!), then went into limp mode. Stopped, restarted, reset limp, went on again and as I was provoking listening to whoosh, went into limp, now will not come out of limp mode even on switch off ignition regeneration. The engine management light and also DPF light have now both come on, a veritable christmas tree's worth of bloody lights now... Could this be as simple as a broken hose from where I removed one to fit the actuator?

I am at my wits end having spent hours fitting the actuator to now have another problem less than a week later...

Any advice greatly appreciated, I have it booked into my local garage later this week, but last time I had a problem they recommended Turbo(£1100), when it was the actuator (£200).

All advice appreciated,

Cheers,

Ian

I have read stories about the actuator needing to be set up extremely accurately or you will get this sort of thing happening.. a certain amount of turbo whistle is normal i believe, my PD170 does it and theres nothing wrong with the boost!!!

I would suggest looking at the actuator as thats the common thing here having replaced it

Yes,  good and obvious point (I should've thought of, thanks!, duurgh), frustrating as I attempted to copy what was set-up before (actuator), I will ask the garage (they have it today), thanks Dread1977,

OK, garage have come back and said they can't regenerate the limp mode or engine fault light / fault have tried two systems and then another garages nearby, I haven't asked for the fault codes, I will when I pick it up.

They are saying its coming up needing a DPF £953 part + £240 to fit and reprogram + VAT and its coming up with a turbo fault, they can opnly see as being the actual turbo £850 + VAT. All in about £2500.00 on a 58 plate 130k miles car...

Can anyone recommend a Hertfordshire / North London Volkswagen / Skoda independant dealer they've used? I need a second opinion.

Thanks,

Ian

DPF!! on what basis do they think that needs replacing?? seriously fella I would consider finding someone local to you from this website who has VCDS and getting them to scan your car, this garage sound like the usual cowboy outfit and trying to sell you fluff.. once you have a genuine scan with that you have something to work with..

best way to generate limp mode is sit at about 2000rpm in 3rd and floor it!! if the vanes dont move correctly it wont boost, the car will detect issues and the car will go into limp..

Usually if a DPF gets to a certain percentage full regeneration stops happening and that itself will cause limp mode, usually though you can do a forced regen via VCDS and just go for a drive... may need a new pressure sensor if you have a fault relating to the G450 sensor but regardless of all that, start with a full scan..

There is a section on here which will give you the names and locations of those with vcds

Dread1977 many thanks for the input, I have PM'd as you suggested. I am going to look for an independant garage too, I've seen Vagtech in Milton Keynes etc, that I might drop in to for a diagnosis.

Hi Ian,

Whooshing sound could be a boost leak. Have you noticed any loss of power?

We can do a full scan and check the DPF soot readings too.

Hi Jim, many thanks for your reply, it's currently in permanent limp, the garage I took it to today, couldn't get it out of limp /regenerate. There is currently the flashing coil light, permanent engine management /fault light and a permanent DPF light. There was a little loss of power when I heard the hiss, but I was hesitant as I was listening to the noise. within a 5 minute journey, it had gone into permanent limp it... I will text if that's okay, to see when we could meet up and maybe find out what I should do next!

Thanks,

Ian

Well many thanks to jimmehg for helping me last Saturday and sparing me a run up the A1 trying to clear the dpf enough to get out of limp! he managed to get a readout (see below), but the dpf is beyond its limits of regen, forced or not. So it's replace I guess, I am not sure of there are any other options?, I don't want to just remove and reprogram, as I'm looking to probably sell the car now, so need to do a proper job so the next person can enjoy it!

If anyone has a recommended garage in the North London area I could try, that would be good, preferable a independant VAG one. My local garage I use have been helpful, but I think this is beyond them as they keep telling me to get a new turbo too...

Thanks,

Ian

What was the soot content of the DPF?? it doesnt mention it above anywhere...

  • Author

I think 50.1 calculated? And describing high 45's for actual levels I believe, I didn't write it down annoyingly!

50.1 isnt beyond a regen fella, mine was over that when i eventually got to replacing the failed pressure sensor... mine was around 54% i know there is all the scare mongering about fires etc and skoda UK wont do it because they are gay!!! however i left the laptop hooked up, mate sat in the passenger seat with VCDS running and we went for a drive as per instructions and gradually the soot content started to go down and eventually came out of limp at 20% but i cleared it right down to 1%..

Id say you need to get someone who fully understands VCDS to look again for you

Well, it took a long time, but after finding and using a local independant VW garage, the guy has been excellent and not accepted the non clearance of the fault code. I ran 3 tanks through with the Wynn's DPF cleaner (that was fun ;-) ) when he couldn't clear it first time and they still couldn't get it to come out of limp after the 3 tanks. The garage then tried their own road test, nothing, then bought a new tool to fire cleaner directly into the DPF apparently, this still to no avail. Final solution for my perplexed garage was to cut open the DPF, inspect, clean over night, re-assemble and this finally cleared the limp. That and a lose hose and its now A1. So took a while but saved a new DPF and Turbo, by going to a conscientious independent VW dealer, very impressed.

Thanks,

Ian

Did you end up getting the turbo actuator set up properly in the end? If you need to know the channels + values let me know ;). You will need a miti vac and VCDS. Dont forget to put the clip + green loctight on the actuator arm aswell.

mattvrestate, many thanks, I used the basic approach of copying, as I didn't have VCDS, with a set of digital calipers to get the length exactly the same as existing, it was a pig to undo the nut on the actuator arm :-), when I put it back on I cut the arm length so I could get a long socket on it and not the VW special tool, and remembered the green thread lock, the independant garage I went to was using VCDS and cleared the faults and had no more coming up, so here's hoping!
