UK road tips from Briskodians (wee bit t.i.c.)

I don't know if you're going to venture into Scotland but since beer has been mentioned a few times your should be aware that Scotland has a lower drink drive limit than England.  In Scotland the limit is 50mg/100ml (which I think may be the same as the Netherlands) whereas in England it is 80mg/100ml.

Another vote for Waze - as good as you can get for avoiding traffic - best on a decent size smart phone screen or passenger holding an ipad. Beware you agree to share your journey data with the database, and there is a datacost.

Police sometimes breathalyse people the next morning so be aware of this - more prevalent around hotels.

Double white lines in the centre of a single carriageway = no overtaking.

Oh the fun we had last week on the motorway just outside of Eindhoven that they decided to close on a Saturday. 90 mins later we had done a 30 mile detour - nightmare. You guys love a 2 lane motorway don't you. Road quality better than ours but not as good as the Germans.

The most important thing to note is:-

if the road has street lights and no other visual speed limit sign; then its always 30mph!

Well I'm back! I've seen roads that were 60mph but felt like that really was too fast, some of them even crossed through small towns so I stuck to 45 instead of 60 mostly.

Highways were all 70 of course, didn't always adhere to that standard but you sure do have a lot of speed camera's on the overpasses.

Sometimes though, people would pass under them going (way) faster than the 73mph I was doing on my speedometer, even though the signs are clear and visible: warning, speed camera... I don't get why.

Now let's hope I didn't miss any of them :-).

The cameras on the 'overpasses' were probably just for congestion logging!

So these signs don't mean speed camera's?

What you have to appreciate is that there are a lot more signs than cameras. Sometimes they're warning you that there's the 'possibility' of them being present 'at some time'. The 'threat' is normally all that's needed to slow you down!
