Can you record from a webcam?

Featured Replies

Been having an interesting conversation recently regarding the use of a webcam as a home security device. He was thinking of setting up an MSN messenger account on his home PC and another at work in order to monitor his house via webcam.

I pointed him towards some more appropriate software that he has now installed to upload images to an FTP site if the webcam detects movement.

But it got us thinking - can you actually record a webcam broadcast that you're viewing in MSN Messenger?

I heard on the grapevine that this is possible, do a search on emule.

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that you can have a network camera that you can hang off your network that doesnt even need a computer to be on. I presume they mean you would hang it off a broadband router.

There are various webcam grabber programs out there as already mentioned.

You can record off a webcam, have you never seen educational home broadcasts that have been saved from them :D

Definitely possible as I've seen some webcam feeds which have been recorded to avi video. A quick Google turned up http://emoney.al.ru/streaming/record-webcam-video.htm, but whether this applies to a web cam under MSN, I'm not sure.

As has been said, you can also get IP web cams which broadcast directly to the web, but that may or may not be relevant to your friend's question ;)

Some webcams come with a security sensor thingy. Mine can be set up and when it senses any movement in the room it will start recording.

What webcam have you got and what software does it use to do the recording? Incidently have you used it to record? Was it easy to set up and use, etc, etc? :D
