Help choosing the right used Yeti

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I have been considering a used Yeti as a replacement second car for a while now and am almost ready to take the leap. I live in hilly Cornwall and most use will be on single carriageway A roads and B/unclassified roads with occasional dual carriageway use. Any longer trips out county will tend to be in our other car. There is just the 2 of us and mostly it will be just me.

I don't think I need a 4x4 as I won't be off roading and we get mild winters down here. I won't do more than 10,000 miles a year but will do enough decent runs to keep a DPF 'sweet'. I do like a car with a bit of go, but was pleasantly surprised by both cars in spite of having only 110bhp. I enjoy my 'toys' so Elegance seems the way to go (I was tempted by a 140 Tdi 4x4 SE with Nav, but the car just felt wrong and 'unloved' so I walked away).

Allowing for my trade in the top end of my budget is about £15k on the windscreen and I don't want to go older than a 62 plate or a car with over 30k miles.

I've narrowed it down to a 1.2TSI DSG Elegance on a 63 plate and 26k miles for £14,995 from a Skoda dealer and a 110TDI Elegance on a 62 plate and only 16k miles for £13,995 from a reputable local Skoda specialist. They will warranty the DPF as I did highlight this would be a concern on a low mileage car of that age. Although there is £1k difference in windscreen price, with trade in negotiations this drops to £750.

So - which car is the better bet? I've read the various comparison threads and am still in a dilemma! Real world, which is quicker and most satisfying to own?

While I'm 'on' - whilst test driving, I noticed that the digital speedometer is in KPH - I couldn't figure how to convert it to mph - can this be done?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and opinions offered.

Welcome to Briskoda

I’m not the right person to advise between the 110 and a 1.2 as we also live in a hilly area and personally thought were both a bit lacking so we chose the 170.

Yes this (and many other things) can be done with VCDS... look in my signature for an owner local to you who can make the changes.

Thanks Gizmo68. I think if a more powerful one came up that was 'right' I would be interested, but being down this end of the country, choice isn't that plentiful.

Hi and welcome, I currently have the 110 4x4 and don't find it lacking in any situation but with the 4x4 it has the 6 speed box, this is my second 110 4x4, the wife has it during the week and it gets lots of short trips, I just give it a good blast at the weekends   and have not had any problems with the DPF.  my first Yeti was the 1.2 which again went well, we had a trip to Yorkshire to meet up with a few other members on a little run and it managed to keep up with the 2 140s on some good hills, have a look at this tread.  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/165668-yeti-adventure-the-heartbeat-run/page-2?hl=%20the%20%20heartbeat%20%20run

The only reason for change to the 110 was I needed the 4x4, more than happy with both engines, if the new engine line up puts the 1.4 in the right spec with 4x4 that would be my first choice for the current ones replacement in 2 years time.

Hi. I came to my Yeti from a Volvo V50 2.0 diesel and there hasn't been one day where I've regretted the move. Although mine is "only" a 1.2 litre petrol (with a manual box) it is just so much more enjoyable to drive than the Volvo ever was. Arguably it might be a bit lacking on dual carriageways at motorway speeds (although it's never been a problem for me, you just need to think about when to overtake rather than just pull out, floor the accelerator and pray) on all other roads it is just a great vehicle to be in. After the Volvo I was expecting it to struggle a bit on hills but it doesn't and although you can feel a difference between driver-only and when it's fully loaded it's never disappointed - and that includes a holiday travelling all around Devon carrying four adults and three dogs (and there and back all our luggage including a roof rack and cases strapped alongside!!).

I suggest you've got to test drive both to see which best suits your driving style and what you are looking for in the car but one thought did occur to me which is that down in your neck of the woods even if you do 10,000 miles each year are you going to get the sustained high speed driving to keep the DPF happy? I do a similar mileage and it was my concern about this that swayed me to the 1.2 petrol. As regards the 26k on the 63 plate 1.2 TSi, I'm just coming up to 18,000 miles on mine at 2 years old and over the last couple of months seem to be getting an improvement in fuel consumption (from just on 39mpg to just over 40 mpg - brim to brim so true mpg) so you could be buying at the sweet spot for economy. I can't speak for the diesel but do recall reviews when I was making my decision that suggested the 110 diesel was the weakest engine in the range, but only by comparison rather than the engine being flawed so i's really a matter of preference.

I suspect whichever Yeti you buy you will be more than satisfied and I do agree for the litlle extra money the Elegance is the spec to go for - lots of things to play with/confuse you; I was still finding things after six months of ownership.

Thanks for the comments and advice so far. Having driven both, the 110 Tdi was much as I expected and the 1.2 Tsi DSG was the most surprising. The car will be used to cart boat bits about, so roof bars are essential for spars and such like.

The V50 is a diesel and the DPF has been ok. I think DPFs are better these days and regenerate more readily, but I am erring towards the 1.2.

I have recently changed from a 2010 Octavia II 1.8TSI 4X4 Estate which I owned for 3 years to a new Yeti Outdoor 1.2TSI DSG Elegance. Much as I liked the former, I find the latter nicer to drive and the engine is surprisingly quiet, smooth and lively. I finally get why the Yeti has such enthusiastic owners. :)

I think a petrol engine is better suited to your sub 10k/year mileage

I come from Cornwall - though now live in North Yorkshire - and spend quite a bit of time in Cornwall with my wife visiting relations, friends etc. I drive a 1.2 DSG Elegance and can honestly say I am delighted with the car even after 3 years of driving it! My previous car was a 2.0 Diesel Octavia and I was concerned about changing to "just" a 1.2 petrol. The major difference I noticed was how much quieter a petrol is to a diesel, the DSG 7 speed box makes driving effortless and certainly the car does not feel underpowered, of course it doesn't have the grunt of a 2 litre diesel but unless you are towing heavy loads or driving at 80 mph + continually I don't think you will notice the difference. Suffice it to say we drive from North Yorkshire to Cornwall and back 2-3 times a year (400 miles each way), do the trip each way in one day and happily cruise at 70'ish on the motorways. While in Cornwall we drive all the coast roads - and you know what the coast road is like between Padstow and Newquay - easily with no fuss and ample power. The MPG average over the last 3 years is 41 (brim full to brim full), ranging from high 30's on long distance high speed runs to 44 on local pottering.

I live down the road from you in Lanner and I've just got a 62 plate 2.0 tdi110bhp 4x4.

Haven't felt the need for any more power yet, but I think any less would be noticable, particularly on the A30 (I regularly go up to Liskeard and Bodmin for work).

FYI - don't buy the black 2.0tdi Elegance from the old Skoda garage in Penryn. Although it's low milage (16000) it had a very hard life - I saw it when it arrived (I bought mine from there) and there wasn't a single panel that hadn't receive some sort of damage. Outside was so bad I didn't even bother with the interior - once I saw the smashed rear reflector and gouges in the plastics I knew it wasn't for me, especially for £13995!

Hi djswivel - you beat me to the 4x4 :) in Penryn - a nice spec SE with the Nav. Yes - I saw the black one when it came in too, I know what you mean - it has cleaned up well, but I am certainly looking towards the 1.2 in Helston although it is right on the top of our budget. I saw that when it came in too and was clearly more 'loved'. SWMBO went for a test drive in it this afternoon and liked it too, particularly the DSG box .

Trouble is - when I buy a car, being a tight a**e Cornishman with deep pockets and short arms I do faff a bit before parting with money[emoji53]

I probably would have held out a bit longer if we weren't desperate for a car given that the fabia had blown up!

We're pretty chuffed with the spec we ended up with, and I didn't feel we paid too much for it :)

Helston was going to be my next stop if we didn't like the Penryn one - from past conversations with people (if you're looking at Carrs) they can be negotiated with quite well!

Good luck!

Well I've made the dealer an offer by email on the 1.2 DSG. A 26k mile car, June 2013reg. Elegance with metallic the only option. They were asking £14,999 and my Volvo books at £8,400 - £8,500. I have offered them £6,000 cost to change provided they include replacement of the missing front mats and the flexible storage thingy that goes in the boot for completeness.

I'll see if they accept as I feel that's a reasonable deal and as far as I can push them. If they don't accept I am happy to walk away.

Hello Falmouthboy and welcome.  We're just across the Tamar, not far from Newton Abbot and hope to visit your part of the world more often (last break was in the lovely Royal Duchy for an anniversary break).

Have never felt short changed owning the 1.2 DSG but there's only two of us.

It's just had its 4th service and we still love it.  Only fly in the ointment is the DSG.  Ours has had a new clutch pack (due to judder) and new transmission oil as per the recall plus a couple of transmission electronics resets. All under warranty. The dealer has been fine and it's perfect as we speak.  Skoda would probably pay something towards any future repairs on the clutch pack but it's not covered under extended warranties (this has been confirmed).  But it may never give a scrap of trouble again, but the older they get the more the liability, of course.

I would readily consider another (but would take out the manufacturers 5 year warranty) and would happily recommend the 1.2 DSG in respect of the way it drives....never driven a diesel one and I understand the diesel DSG is less of a liability...but then there's the increasing question of whether diesels are the thing to have, for several reasons which we won't go into here.

Hope it works out well for you.  When you want to think about extended warranties there's loads of coverage of them on the site here.

Well after all the shall I shan't I on the 1.2 DSG I have today put down a deposit on a new 110TDI 2WD Elegance. Allowing for discounts, a decent PX offer and a low rate PCP it just made more sense to go new. The dealer would have let me have the TSI DSG at my offer price, but I am better off leaving the money in my fixed rate ISA. I wanted Nav too so considered a Greenline with Nav, but it worked out a silly £23 a month more on a 36 month PCP - £193 instead of £170. With some cars the Nav half pays for itself with residuals on a PCP, in the case of Yetis clearly not. It's a nice to have not an essential and at that price I think I'll stick with the Garmin. Also I like the Cappuccino colour over the petrol blue Greenline.

The decent price is for a stock car rather than a 2016 model, but I can live with that.

Well - now taken delivery of the new Yeti and very happy indeed. I think the City trim looks slightly smarter than the Outdoor. Lots of clever touches in the car. I like the idea of the stereo reminding you to take your phone with you. A few minor niggles, like my 'normal size' warning triangle not fitting in the space provided and no means to swap between mph/kph on the maxi dot. Also, considering I'm taking it easy while running in, it's surprisingly nippy.

Thanks Gizmo. Will do in the coming weeks. There are 3 people on the map, all about an hour away so I will see who can help out.

While looking thru the set-up menus this week on the Amundsen there is a box that can be deselected to get rid of that message.

We carry our phones in the box on top of dash and at our advanced years find it helpful to be reminded
