What to look out for?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I've got a 2013 fabia and am happy with it, the parents like it too so are keen to stick with skoda.

So theyre looking at a Rapid. Not sure what spec itll be, but it will undoubtably be the 1.2 TSI engine.

Itll be a year or two old so they dont take the hit on depreciation.

So is there anything we should look out for with the rapid when buying?

The 1.2 tsi, is it still a chain driven engine? I know the first models had trouble with rattling Tensioners, but what about the newer engines? Still chain or did it move to belt?

Cheers

Hatchbacks from first production year have notoriously bad ride.  Suspension and steering were upgraded after Spaceback was introduced (late '13?).

Only Greentech 1.2 gets cheap £30 road tax, standard ones without startstop pollute a little more and are in a pricier band.

Pre-reg cars can save you the VAT/year 1 depreciation hit.  Often a lot of Rapid (& Toledo) pre-reg on the market at about 12k.  This could well be cheaper in the next few months as the old stock with pre-Euro 6 engines will have to be registered before September.

Thats good to know about the ride, cheers. Probably looking at a spaceback anyway, so might not be a prob

Dont want a green tech as im assuming that 1.2 is the diesel?

Cheers (:

Greentech is the stop/start so gets the £30 VED.

Diesel I believe is 1.6, hardly worth the extra cost in fuel at the pump if you're not doing say 10k+ annual mileage.

Greentech is the 1.2 TSi but with stop start added. In mixed motoring I find about 6% better mpg, now I've figured out how to have it active - Doh!

(my previous default aircon settings cancelled it out)

Camelspyyder is wrong about £30 road fund licence only on Greentech models. I have a 1.6 TDI DSG & that has a £30 RFL.

Oh sorry.

I got confused with the 1.2tdi used on the fabia greenline.

Green tech sounds good then, can you turn the stop/start off?

If so, no brainer isnt it lol

Yes you can override it with a switch on the centre console. However I accomplished it by leaving the aircon on windscreen all the time :)

This is clear in the Skoda manual, but unfortunately the SEAT one doesn't mention it.

Other info:

The 1.2TSi in the rapid is very hard to get to the published mpgs. most on here get mid to high 40's, although some have done better.

The wide tyres on 16/17 inch wheels cost about 3mpg compared with the narrower 15's, so we do suffer for the better looks.

Ah right okay. Sounds good then. Will try for a green tech if possible (:

Hmm thats about what she gets now anyway. Shes got a 2005 polo with the 64bhp 1.2 HTP. so really all she'll notice is an increase in power and refinement. Ideal. I've driven the 105bhp 1.2 tsi in the fabia, it is a nice engine isnt it (:

Thanks for all your help by the way (:

I'll get searching ;).

TSI GreenTech are very had to find, as most have been built without this kit. For the 86 model it doesn't effect the VED but with the 105 like I have then without GreenTech it puts it in band D.

Would suggest you try find a Spaceback SE Sport if within the budget, as they are by far the best standard spec, with just about every bit of kit you would need.

Ahh okay. Good to know. She'd be fine with an 86 anyway to be honest, shes far from a fast driver haha. I for some reason thought they only did the rapid in 105, but obv wrong haha.

Will check out that spec

Thankyou.
