Pardon the amateur question here, but I saw one of these on a car the other day. What is the aim here? Is it for colder weather?

Yeah in the winter a diesel engine especially takes an age to get up to temp, this should, in theory, allow the oil/coolant to get up to temp quicker however I'd not be fitting one and leaving it on for a long journey myself. 

As stated above, it helps your engine warm up quicker in winter and it is perfectly safe to use even on longer journeys as well.

I'd offer £25 if your interested.
