Had a remap but not the whole story.....

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I had a DPF mod a couple of weeks ago and a remap to take me to 190BHP which included disablin gthe DPF lights and the EGR, but when I got it back I found it rather disappointing to say the least. I looked about and found a tuning forum with many pople on there remapping cars all around the world. I turned to a Czech guy since Skodas are Czech and he really knew his stuff. we talked through tuning and modding what I had done and my problems. Then he said, you have electronically disabled your EGR but not mechanically right? Answer yes. He said put a plate in, which I did last night and WOW!!! Mega difference. Low revs power is improved, acelleration is constant throughout the rev range, its amazing.

Lesson to be learned, get the EGR mapped out yes, but blank it off too! All you need is 1 plate and 1 gasket.

Mine has a EGR but it very strong. To the extent that a local garage that does Revo maps was stunned at how quick it was - mine's a Shark map.

They said it had way more low down grunt Mike which I really like. People often want to get a local map but I got mine done in Mansfield even though I live in West Sussex.

Same chap in Czech just tweaked my MAP and I installed it, oh my god, now the car is even better. If anyone wants his details.... drop me a line.

My ears just pricked up there, I'm interested in how your flashing the ECU..?

Using MPPS, takes a little over a minute.

Is your inbox baulking at the volume of PMs?!

I'm a little confused re improving my Octavia MkII BKC 105PD.

After two years of ownership of this slug, not having the money for a remap and not too sure of cheap resistor boxes, all I really needed was this?:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MPPS-V13-02-Interface-VAG-USB-Cable-OBDII-OBD2-VW-AUDI-BMW-Citroen-ECU-Flasher-/331206046591?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d1d6b337f

For under £17 I can flash my own remaps, does this also have VCDS type capability?

Presumably the included CD has generic performance maps to try?

Do you need online activation?

Can you download remaps/cost?

Sorry for all the questions but it seems too sensible an offer when most people recommend established company remaps and ridicule plug in boxes.

Any help gratefully received, I'm on the edge of selling my dead slow Octy.

I'm not looking to tinker too much with settings just give it more go.

If a remap is simply that, a copy of your original map with various parameters modified for the various economy/performance benefits why all the fuss about seeing a specialist.

Surely all ECUs for a given model are flashed identically at the factory, so I fail to see why people harp on about a remap specific to their car, maybe the remap is tweaked to compensate for engine wear/condition using a rolling road etc but surely that would only stress components more or less to achieve the target goals.

If someone has a good remap and is happy to share it on the internet for owners of same engines what's the problem, copyright issues aside!

I will be doing some more homework on the matter, surely it's no different from updating the firmware on many electronics these days, from BIOS updates to mobile phones operating systems.

I'm just taking a plain down to earth view of things, please feel free to chime in if you know better/facts.

All I can see is that it's a money racket and folks get paranoid about things like tuning where it's a black magic destined to go bang if tried at home.

Given two identical cars, one gets a specialist remap costing £££'s and the other gets a DIY remapping with the same parameters as the first, why should there be any worry or fuss...

Am I over simplifying things?

The PD105 does 0-60 in 12 seconds, that's slug territory whatever way you measure it.

Different people like their cars to perform in different ways, low down power, high end power, traffic light Grand Prix, cruising, bragging rights etc. therefore custom map. The reason for seeing a specialist is a well tried and tested map guaranteed not to cause undue problems to components down the road. Any monkey can fiddle with a computer and change bios settings etc. but will the computer boot up correctly next time, that is the question.

My 1.9 tdi was mapped at start of life. Going to get it done again as its a bit sluggish now. But considering I have a hell of a lot of weight in the boot I've never had a problem.

Tops out at 116mph though (by Gps)

Personally for the older more simple engines I would whole heartedly trust blacksmoke remaps and mpps I know about 10 cars that have used his £45 remaps including 3 of my own and completely trust them. If he doesn't have a map to suit your car you send him your files. It's easy and once you have done 1 you don't look back.

Granted a 105pd isn't bought for racing but it's hardly pushing the limits of what the engine can do is it.

Mind you after mapping my last car I did think sods this I'm buying a vrs but guess what... I got it mapped.
