Immobiliser issue. Heat related?

Featured Replies

I've searched the forums previously but had no luck finding any answers. If i've missed a topic that already covers this please direct me to that post but until then i'll leave this here.

I've had intermittent issues with my immobiliser for about a year now, but recently it's been getting a lot worse.

I've never had a problem first thing in the morning. At 7:00am when it's cool outside it starts first time, every time. But like clockwork, when i get off the train at 6:00pm and the car has been warmed up by the day's sunshine the immobiliser doesn't disengage so EVERY evening i have to sit in my car for 40-80 minutes waiting for the little yellow car/key symbol to go away. It always disengages eventually but as you can imagine i'm getting a little frustrated with having to sit in my car for an hour every day after work.

It might sound completely mental but i believe it's the heat that's causing the problem. I've had codes read but i can't remember off the top of my head what the codes were. But i think there were 2 related codes. I think 1 was intermittent signal but i can't recall the other.

I have 2 keys and they both work when they want to so it's not the transponder chip/incorrect programming.

I also have a new(ish) (less than 1 year old) RAC battery so i'm 95% sure that's not a low voltage problem although i haven't tested it.

So the question is: Has anyone experienced similar issues? If so, how did you fix it and what was the cost?

Welcome to the forum.

First things first,

Best check the Cars Battery then (while it has a warranty.) and the connection / Earth.

& the remote batteries.

Hi RageSkoda,

Just wanted to let you know I'm in an identical situation with my '02 Fabia. It's always fine the early morning, but as sun heats up the car, or even after doing a quick stop after a 5 minute drive, the immobilizer strikes. Luckily I have the 4 digit code to temporarirly disable the immobilizer, so it's only a minute of dialing in the code and get the car started. Until you get the thing fixed, you should find out your code... that will save you a lot of waiting. Search the forum on how to extract the code.

Will post any progress I make here. Right now I'm worried it might be the wiring loom. Apparently early 2000's skodas are known for crappy looms taking in water, causing intermittent electrical problems.

This could be a faulty reader coil on the ignition barrel or faulty wiring related to it. It could also be a faulty instrument cluster.

When it happens, try moving the steering column up and down and back and forth to see if it kicks into life. If it does, it may be the wiring to the reader coil.

Hi there I have a similar issue with my skoda fabia Classic 2002 1.4mpi 8v! Sometimes works fine but others it won't start for days! It happened to me today while I was out and about parked in a car park where I was only away from the car for about 10 mins since it was last running! I left it for an hour and still not working so I called the AA out and they got it working but they told me it is most likely to be the instrument cluster! I am looking into replacing the instrument cluster and was wondering if anyone could help me! I want to no if I get a used or new instrument cluster do I need to programme it in to the car or can I just plug the new one in and it will work?

Thanks in advance

Welcome :)

You can't just plug a replacement cluster in. They need programming.

Quite often the problem is failed solder joints on the cluster.

Thanks! Is the only place that can program them the main dealer? Or can other garages do it?

I'm not sure TBH. I'm sure someone else on here will know...

Hey RageSkoda,

Did you make any progress on this immobiliser issue yet?

  • 1 month later...

I carried out the cable change described in http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/281731-fabia-immobilizer-key-signal-too-low/

I cut up some old cable I found in the house, fitted it into the existing plug on the ignition side (after cleaning it), and the other end in the green connector on the back of the dash cluster.

It has fixed my issues. Now there's just an annoying power steering issue left :)
