VCDS, What operating systems?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have VCDS on an old XP laptp, but the mouse pad doesnt work, the keyboard is dying, the backlight is shot and half the USB's dont work and thats all when i can get the power to work, so its time to get  anew old laptop or netbook. Does anyone have VCDS running on android netbooks or the windows ones?

Thanks.

Android is out unless you have one of the brand new HEX-NET interfaces. As for windows machines, any thing running XP to 8.1 should be ok as long as it's not ARM or Windows RT: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_1.html

1.4  What  are the computer requirements?

A computer running Microsoft Windows.    A Laptop, Netbook or Tablet computer is best, but a desktop PC can also be used.

With a Serial interface:  As of VCDS Release 11.x, we recommend at least a 500 MHz Pentium-II (or AMD equivalent) with 128 MB of RAM and Windows 2000 or newer.   Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 are all fine.    As of Release 10, we no longer support Windows 95, 98, ME or NT4.

With a USB interface: We recommend at least a 1 GHz Pentium-III (or AMD equivalent) with 256 MB of RAM and Windows XP or newer.  With Windows Vista, 7, or 8 use a machine robust enough to properly support the operating system.

VCDS may work on some lesser PCs, but machines with specs lower than the above recommendations are "unsupported" meaning if it doesn't work, please don't ask us for help.

Available disk-space should be a non-issue on any PC made in the last 10 years; VCDS requires less than 100 MB.

Screen resolution can be as low as 640x480, but 800x600 or more is recommended.

If you are using a power supply for a laptop, it should be one specifically designed for that purpose, NOT a "universal" adapter.

Systems running Windows in a virtualized environment (for example Virtual PC on a Mac) are not supported.  See also Question 1.8.

1.16  Will VCDS work on Microsoft Surface tablets?

There are two versions of these tablets, "Surface" and "Surface Pro". The regular "Surface" tablets are based on ARM CPUs running "Windows RT" and have no compatibility with normal Windows x86 programs.  The regular Windows-based version VCDS will not work on these, but VCDS-Mobile  does. The "Surface Pro" tablets use Intel CPUs and Windows 8 Pro, and VCDS will works fine on them.

cheers langers. I will get an old windows netbook of some descrption.

I bought a refurbished HP Elitebook  Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz, 4Gb Memory, 250Gb HD perfect condidion (A1) with new battery and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit for £149-99 from one of the refurbished IT sites about 18 months ago... still working perfectly, and was my sole computer until 6 months ago when I purchased another HP refurb ... this time a small form desktop, Intel core 2 Duo 3.16Ghz 4 Gb ram and Win 7 Pro 64 bit again, which I upgraded to 12Gb memory and again 250Gb HD... (soon to have SSD OS drive). this was actually sold as "scuffs and marks" category for £99-00 but the only mark was a slight dent on the corner of a side panel which I straightened with my fingers.

Newer tech... i3 - i5 CPUs are available for more money, but I find the older core 2 duo CPUs are more than adequate, and actually more memory with the 64 bit OS gives a good speed boost.

Refurbished is the way to go for a bargain.

Alan.

I've got one of these.

Along with a  64GB MicroSD for £130 from Argos. Despite what the description says, it runs full Windows 8.1 with a quad core Intel Atom CPU.

I've installed VCDS and when plugged into a USB OTG cable the interface is picked up fine, although I have yet to test it on the car.

As a bonus you also get 12 months Office 365 personal subscription for free, which includes 1TB of Onedrive storage and full Office 2013 software.

ooh both the above sound like good ways to go. Its only for keeping in the boot of the car because i got caught out on holiday once and nearly had to pay £85 for a $tealer to reset an EML. But got it sorted without. I guess I could upgrade the house laptop and pension off the old one.... it is 11 years old and was free back when Orange broadband gave you a free laptop when you signed up for 2 years!!!!

Linx 8 tablet - £89.99 for a full Windows 8.1 tablet. I've got one I use for mobile suipport rather than a laptop these days.

Just need a USB hub and a USB OTG cable (convert micro usb to normal) and you're away!

Ignore that it doesn't say Linx in the description - it is but Novatech pretend that all the stuff they sell is their own!
