1.4 pd performance issues

Featured Replies

I have a 08 1.4 pd80 fabia, whilst the mid range....between 2-3,500 rpm is pretty good

low down is very laggy, with gentle pressure of accelerator ( poor )...i find this frustrating

is this my car?....any ideas folks?

Mileage?

Serviced up to date etc?

below 1800-2000rpm there is little if any turbo boost

has the car always behaved in this manner? or is this a problem that has gradually got worse or suddenly started?

have you recently been driven a different car and then come back to driving your 1.4TDi?

Got a 1.4 tdi myself will let u know how mine is at those revs after iv bin out if it helps :)

cheers folks....forgot to mention, car has 118k on clock with full skoda history, only had the car two months(car been like this since i bought it!)

i have not driven another so can't compare.

I have the same engine in my car, like you say very laggy at low revs. I would say it is just the normal engine characteristics rather than any problem with it. Acceleration from traffic lights hardly sets the world alight and most cars will overtake quite easily. This engine is more for economy than performance.

It is a 1.4 diesel, so its not gonna pull from low revs like a 1.9pd or bigger engines would anyway

ok to update you, i drove to nottingham and back earlier to take the littlun' to see disney on ice :P . car is as you said, quite sluggish until the 2k tipping point when the turbo kicks in and gives it a little welly, as mentioned this is not a fast car so dont expect alot :) . regardless to say i am currently looking at a small increase via a remap which should smooth out the transition a little, if it bothers you that much perhaps something you could look into also?

Thanks for the reply's folks....may look in to a remap to improve drivability !!.....think I was spoilt

with polo pd 100 sport, I wish now I had hung on for a 100 pd model fabia...ah well.

Yeah 1.9pd's pull quite well from low.

I drive a T5 transporter with the 102bhp one in, its not bad. Even loaded up with tools it pulls nicely from low, still abit of an increase at 2k when the turbo kicks in mind.

Miles better than the 140bhp transit i used to drive. That thing did nothing until 2k, then wheelspun everywhere lol

You can get ~106 bhp out of ur engine on a stage 1 shark remap so definitely worth it from what I've read, someone posted remap results on the same engine and said even 20bhp+ ontop of the standard 80bhp was like driving a different car! Quite looking forward to it myself!

Also the gearing on the 1.4 apparently means that with sufficient remaps they can pull very well.

problem is the remap will improve the performance when the turbo spins up, but it is limited what it can do without the additional air in the cylinders

maps can push a little more fuel throw to spin the turbo up at slightly lower revs but not much more to improve low end

I owned a 1.4tdi PD 80 Fabia before my current car, And agree that off boost it was poor, But you need to remember that its only a 3-cylinder so 1 less firing cylinder per crank rotation, this at low revs with no boost to assist will cause the lack of Torque.

I personally found the 1.4 was o.k in the Fabia, but as people say it was an economy based Engine not a performance machine!

Eb, the 1422cc unit is a brilliant engine. Max torque is at 2200 rpm and it should pull quite well from around the 1750rpm mark. But it won't set the world on fire. It may be, with repect, that you are not used to driving this car. As tamiyaandy is saying they are ok. But you cannot drive them quite like a conventional diesel. Being a 3 cylinder unit it has to rev a bit more. A common mistake is to change up into 4th and 5th gears too early. This kills the power. The gear box is identical to the 1.9pd engine so she is a little over geared in reality. I never used 5th gear under 55mph and 4th gear only when doing 32-35mph or above. She revs too low for useable power under that and it's normal. However, on the open road they do go great. At 118,000 miles yours may need a bit of fettling and maybe the egr valve could do with a clean. Run some injector cleaner for diesels through her, that can revive a higher mileage diesel somewhat.

-sorry for hijack - :)

whats your take on a remap btw, ive seen a few of your posts before infact i am sure youve answered a many few of my questions also :notme: , think its worth it for even a small gain of ~20bhp?

No wonder if it doesnt pull well with a 1.9PD gearbox in. The engine will never pull like that from low will it..

thanks estate man, just to throw another spanner in the works, as stated, my previous car was a polo sport 1.9 pd and

I found that car just as economical as the 1.4 pd,  which leads me to think there could be an issue with my particular car

I will look into it!

The 1.9PD will be just as economical, and also has more go than the 1.4PD.

Maybe see if some other member that has a car the same as yours can check it out,

or you theirs.

Your car sounds to be performing just as it would be expected to do.

118,000 miles,  so maybe just use good oil, good filters, good diesel and just enjoy it if it runs well but needs so throttle to get a move on.

Yes the engine is strong enough to take some remapping. But I've not had much experience of doing that with the pd engines. Some on here have. So it may be worth starting a new thread so folks can see it. Only word of caution is not to go over 120ps as the engine is then in the 'unreliable' area, as Audi found out.  Best area is around the 100ps output area.
