Wedge-Shaped Disc Pads

Featured Replies

Hi there -

I've recently purchased a used 1.6tdi Rapid Spaceback with about 14k on the clock.

After about a weeks use (and abut 600 miles!) I noticed a lot of brake dust on the front wheels - looking more closely I see the pads a wearing wedge-shaped, with the lining on the outer part of the circumference much thinner than the inner part.  This is true of both front brakes.

Not something I've seen since the old days of the Triumph with their square disc pads.

This doesn't look right to me - before I go trotting back to the dealer though, is this normal for these cars?

Piccie attached I hope (my photobucket has decided to not let me copy links any more

Mine look similar (Toledo) and they do show a good deal of dust from the pads, seems normal.

Yes the pads are correct no need to worry.

Notice though like our car the discs are fairly rusty (despite in my case above average mileage); seem to be poorer quality materials being used than in the past in this area.

My Hatchback are like it too.

My discs seem to rust more than either of my Fabia's .

You need to use the brakes more :D

No what you mean though, they seem to get a film of rust just standing overnight.

I paint mine, as below. Going to do the Toledo discs sometime soon, they are starting to rust on the none contact surfaces.

Well, having properly examined the brakes today (i.e. took the wheel off and had a look) I can confirm that I need the following parts:-

Scraper,  egg from face, removal of, quantity 1, part no. DLT2015

How could I possibly mistake the chamfer for this kind of problem I don't know, except maybe age is creeping up on me! Especially as there were no funny noises.

Doh ...

I think I need one of these ...

It really does make a lot more brake dust than my MX5 though, I guess I'll have to get used to that (or rather, my other half will!)

That's an MX-5 wheel I posted above, which model do you have?

Basic 1.8 option pack, circa 2007, very few extras apart from yellow stickers on jacking points, a 7-pin connector for the lights so I can use a bike rack and trailer board, and some good dollops of waxoil on the black bits underneath! And a good bit of muck I'm afraid. And 6 spare wheels (its a long story) And a silly grin - had the road from Kidder to Tenby to myself this morning, in the sunshine - oops er am I on the wrong forum?
