vacuum hoses

Featured Replies

please forgive my noobiness!

first turbo car ive owned, i like the idea of replacing vacuum hoses for the coloured silicone ones. so which ones to replace and is it just a case of removing one hose and fitting a new?

does anything need pressuring after?

thanks!

To be honest if you're going to that kind of effort with vacuum hoses you may as well simplify them, chuck them in the bin and fit an oil catch can.

So far I've done the catch can and breather simplification from the cold side and under the intake manifold. It's a mess down there and doing this kind of thing gives better access to temp sensor, thermostat etc. A catch can that actually does something worthwhile isn't cheap, but it keeps the charge lines much cleaner and when you see what it gets filled with you're glad it's not flying round your engine. And all that said by the time you've bought all the silicone lines for existing system you may as well have bought a catch can, fluoro silicone line and length of hose.

All that said, the main things that benefit from a silicone upgrade are the turbo intake pipe and intercooler to throttle body. If you still have side mount cooler ttat pipe gives a more constant diameter, and the TIP is fatter at the bottom, increasing intake and helping spool. There aren't really performance gains from silicone vacuum hoses, you're just stopping the inevitable splits. Ones to focus on would be crankcase breather Y pipe, lower breather into T piece under manifold, n75 lines...you can get the kits which have the main pipes of concern. Creations motorsport are very reasonable, I've started using ASH hoses on ebay, very good.

I'll be deleting the sai and n249 when I can be bothered, for now I'm happy with the cold side simplify and catch can.

Hope that helps.

Yeah plus they do the crankcase breather Y pipe and the lower breather which has the T piece as all one pipe which goes under intake manifold. They're the ones known for splitting, or if you do a catch can and start simplifying you get rid of them anyway.

Oh they'll need to be trimmed to fit as well. Best way is put a jubilee clip round and use it as a guide for a VERY sharp knife.

so do i just take of old put on new?  do i need to use jubilee clips to hold them on?

Yeah you'll have a bit of a scrap with the oem single use clips that are on the smaller hoses. They're hateful things, need wire cutters through the ear or steadily prise them apart. Jubilee clips win every time. For very narrow hoses you can use the fuel line clamps. But jubilee should see you right for most of it. Take old off, line up against the silicone to give a rough size. With the intercooler hose (I got that exact one) can't remember how much I took off, it was roughly a couple of inch one end and a bit less off the manifold end, you have to watch for the angle of that one and that the bends don't get creased in too much. When you're happy with the length jubilee the manifold end first snug up to it and then clip the cooler end however it rests (have as much overlap as you can) that way it's less inclined to try and roll off under load.

Best to cut cautiously, you can always take more off but go too short and you've screwed it. Trying to get away with them being a little short or long can put extra load on adjoining rubber hose where applicable and this will make them split in no time at all so just take your time. It's a simple job but if you rush it it's easy to mess it up. Watch out for new clips rubbing any hoses.
