1.6 MPI...

Featured Replies

Hi all, new user and this is my first post (not a great one i'm afraid).

I bought a 2005 Octavia Classic 1.6 MPI Estate (MK2) as a run-around and to carry a couple of dogs in the near future (I don't do enough mileage to warrant buying a diesel). It's been a bit of a nightmare so far and the garage I bought it from don't seem that interested either. It seemed ok when I took it for a test drive before purchasing, but since picking it up over a month ago it's had a few issues cropping up here and there! The garage told me it had an oil and filter change just before I picked it up and they thought it was running fine.

It has a 1.6 MPI Petrol engine (75kW BSE type as far as I can tell). 85k on the clock and a mix of Skoda & indy service history (not very detailed and that variable service scheme seems like a joke!).

1. It has a slightly rough idle and occasionally judders/shakes (or jolts?) when sitting still in traffic or at lights etc... It's more noticeable when the engine has warmed up. I took it back and one guy at the garage said he replaced a lead while another guy said it was a coil pack that had been replaced. The diagnostic software/hardware they used said there was a malfunction on cylinder 2 (no fault codes stored, I think this reading was from live data). They said they had sorted it but it still seems the same to me.

2. The engine sounds quite tappety and makes a constant ticking noise which increases when I accelerate. There is also a slight whining noise which sounds inconsistent (tone changes along with the lumpy idle).

3. Exhaust sounds just as rough as the engine.

4. I've never heard the radiator fan (or fans) come on except when using the air con... It's not overheated on me yet though and the temp gauge usually sits around the 90c mark (although the software on my phone using an OBDII Bluetooth adapter shows it as high as 97C).

5. Rear washer jet pipe has popped off somewhere and I can't find any trim in the boot easy enough to pull off (wouldn't know where to begin looking to be honest). I can hear the pump but no water comes out of the nozzle, then the rear window mists up for the next couple of days.

I only really noticed how rough the car sounds after driving around with the windows down... It sounds fine on the inside with the windows up.

Anyone have any experience with these engines? Do they usually sound like an old tank? I have it booked in next week at a VAG specialist for a health check (and new alternator belt)... Fingers crossed!

Anyone here have any advice?

Cheers!

rear wiper could just be block nozzles, as far as the engine goes ??????????????

The 1.6 MPI engine is a very old design, they are a little rough compared to more modern engines.

The rear washer is a known weak point. Stop using it as you are filling the inside of the car up with screen wash - hence the misting up of the rear window, the boot is damp.

The pipe tends to pop on the left side of the boot behind the carpet / CD multi-changer. This needs sorting sooner rather than later as there are important electrical connectors down there that are now likely to be bathing in screen wash, they control the boot mechanism and rear lights. Check that the spare wheel well isn't full of water too.

The sound reminds me a bit of those old Ford CVH engines... I have no idea what kind of oil the garage put in it. I know it has a Mahle oil filter fitted (any good?), but I can't really tell if it's new or not.

Is this the same for the estate model? It's the plain boring "classic" spec, so that means no CD changer in the boot. It doesn't even have those removable side panels that some other estates have in the boot. I don't see any way of removing the carpet without it getting messy

Had the car checked at my local VAG specialist and their equipment cant find any faults at all with the engine. They said i'll probably need to leave the car with them so they can have a better look as there's clearly something wrong with it (lumpy idle and slight whining noise).

The mechanic did say there was a bit of a rattle coming from inside the cat and there was a slight oil smell coming from the exhaust! I've had the car over 2 months (done around 1500 miles in that time) and the oil level has pretty much stayed the same, so  I assume it can't be burning oil? The radiator fan didn't kick in either and the temp gauge stayed at 90 while the car was idling. One of the rad fans comes on when the aircon is on though.

Anyone have any ideas? I know it's had recent spark plugs, coil pack, air filter, oil & filter change. I don't think the fuel filter has ever been changed though.

Yea it's an old engine but well proven and they usually sound a lot quieter than them Ford cvh engines did. You don't say what kind of mpg your getting, could be a sensor making ecu think engine is cold and over fueling when hot.

Fans don't come on much at the best of times if I have worked mine hard and then leave it ticking over for a few minutes, when I stop it, fan comes on for a few minutes even with the key out.

Rear washer jets block up dead easy but just pop out easy to clean but it sounds like yours is at the pipe blown off stage !

Any one find out the problem of this mine runs the same bit lumpy on idle
