Installing 2nd cigarette lighter?

Featured Replies

Is it something I could do safely? (well not me directly, someone with good electrical knowledge ;)) I'd like to install one somewhere down by the fuel filler cap / open boot lever, possibly extending the wiring used by the oem lighter socket.

Anyone done anything like this? I'm assuming as I'm not getting power from one lighter and lighting up the other one I won't be overloading the circuitry above normal, from the oem socket back?

Having never seen the wiring for it before, is it just a case of two wires going to it? I'm assuming one is reasonably chunky to be able to light up the coils in the lighter to red hot in just a few seconds?

im sure audi's and vw's have them in the boot

Fabia Elegance Estates have a 12V outlet in the boot as standard, so the parts should be available. But there will be some heavy-duty cabling to be run to the boot, because I doubt that it is in the loom by default.

Do you mean on the outside? Lighter sockets are not waterproof and the contacts would rust very quickly.

And the idea of having an electrical socket near the fuel filler.....

Personally bud all I used is a three way extensionput down in the passenger foot screwed to center consul by bottom tray. Run the wire through and under handbrake well and up into the exisitng ciggie lighter. Personally I have been known to run a road angel, trafficmaster yq2 and 12VDC-240VAC convertor (FOR LAPTOP) all at the same time with no apparant problems!! Lights seemed nice and bright!

Would second that...just get a splitter, less than a tenner from Halfords. Can easily run three things off one without ill effect - one of the ones at Halfords even has a cut-off to stop you draining the battery too. And it works, but unfortunately will allow the voltage to drop to marginally below what the car needs to start, so remember to unplug it! :D

careful when you remove the center transmission trim bit between the seats!!!! theres a little switch to tell you that your hand break is on, if you forget to clip it back in..you drove over 10mph and it BEEPS at you:P had that happen yesterday

I've been looking at doing this for my Road Angel (Compact, so needs a cig lighter socket and can't be properly hardwired) and satnav etc.

I've decided the cheapest and easiest way is goign to be to get a 2 or 3 way splitter and screwing or sticking it down somewhere (havent decided where yet). However, I don't want the obvious thief magnet cable going into the standard cig lighter socket all the time, so im going to get an auto electics bloke to wire it in for me... Shouldnt cost more than 20 quid I'm told!!

Oh, and I'm making sure I get it wired onto a circuit that loses power once the ignition is off

Yes, sometimes you just need a fag when you're filling up

"filler cap / open boot lever"

Think he's going to have it down next to the driver's seat rather than out near the fuel cap... :)

Still knowing Jason anything is possible, he might just want the quickiest skoda ever....

Just straight up!!!

PMSL - NOT by the actual fuel filler cap - just down on the driver's side trim. Its because the best place for the Navman is on the driver's side window where its out the way enough to have clear view of thw windscreen/mirror and side window but still be functional.

Just when its there the power cable has to go across the steering wheel and down, which hits my knee when driving. Just would like to have power where I have the kit.

And if it's really on the driver's side window (?! - what happens when you lower the window?) you could use a coiled power lead to accommodate opening the door.

You don't lower the window. ;) (well, more than about 3" :D)

If I have to wind down for parking attendant or toll booth, the thing will have to come off for a minute. Not sure I want to start looking at giving it its own power straight from the fuse box. Sounds like I'd blow something and have to rewire the car... again.

I posted about this a while ago J. I put from from the boot of an Octy Est I found in the scrappy in SWMBO's car. It's in the centre console to the left side of the gear change.

I'll see if I can find it.

I've got an extra lighter socket neatly hiden behind my dash - wired into the fuse socket so that my TTG could be plugged into it.

The cable then simply runs down the trim near the A-Pillar. Looks quite neat. Not sure how easy it is to see from the pic.

Also I'm trying out a Road Angel Navigator (my Dad got issued it but as he has already been issued Road Angel II and his Superb came with Sat Nav as std it was spare but in need of a good test) The other pic shows just how messy the wires can be!

Can't upload pics - they are too big - anyone care to help????
