pre-registered cars

Featured Replies

When a dealer pre-registers a car do they need to put the rfl on at the same time?

If they do tax it, do they not then automatically SORN them and get the refund as they are deemed to be off the road on private land?

Reason I ask is I have bought a preregistered car and I know the dvla site is slow to update, which is the problem.

I have paid for 12 months rfl as part of the purchase price but it is still showing as 6 months from first registration but with no physical tax disc will the garage/dealer have proof of putting 12 months on it from today as they say they have (I know it will be back dated to beginning of this month).

I'm due to collect the car tomorrow but need to know easiest way to check they have done what I have paid for, really wish I was more trusting of dealers.

It will take a week or so to update. Just keep an eye on it and chase if it dosent change. Mine was the same when I bought it.

In a recent trade magazine it was mentioned that Skoda were one of the worst for pre registering cars.  I heard of one dealer having two transporters of cars turn up unannounced at the end of the quarter, because they hadn't reached their sales target.

My dealer gave me a photocopy of the receipt provided by the Post Office.

And the point of not producing physical tax discs was to save on......?

I don't think the DVLA have thought this through properly, at the very least their website needs to be real time or updated quicker.

You'll find out if it's taxed or not then the nice boys in blue have a word with you.

Get it written on paper

Not the I'm cynical or anything, but I don't think it was a paper saving/penny pinching exercise, is was a way of coining in a good few quid extra each year.

The thinking is that, let's say someone taxes their car for a year at £120, 6 months in they sell it, the new chappy can't have the tax as it will be rebated to the current owner BUT unless the owner sends the paperwork off and it gets processed at the back end of a month they will lose the next months tax. OK in this instance it's a tenner, BUT £10 x XXXX thousand cars soon adds up to a nice drink each year for bugger all  :swear:

That's my thoughts on the whole scenario anyway.

As for checking, barring a copy of what the post office have handed over I don't think there's anything as it is up to someone at Swansea to actually enter in the new information.

Absolutely! Now that everything is fully computerised there's no reason why tax had to be dated from the start of a month. It could just as easily start / end on the actual date of transfer of the vehicle.

I bought a used car on 20 April, which was delivered to me by the previous owner. As I was going away for a week it was going to be off road until May so I didn't feel like paying tax for April. It took numerous attempts to get through to DVLA to be advised that I would have to declare a SORN to avoid receiving a penalty for not taxing the car. Previous owner sent the V5 change of ownership on the day of purchase. I sent the SORN two days later with a covering letter stating that it would only apply to the end of the month.

Last week I received two letters from DVLA on the same day. First was the new V5 in my name, the second was the SORN returned unprocessed because I wasn't the registered keeper. Despite allowing the two day gap, they had obviously tried to process the SORN just before the change of ownership.

Not sure whether I'll hear anything further from them but the whole process was barely worth the hassle for what was a high tax band car. With a low tax band it would be easier just to cough up the double tax for the month of purchase, which is clearly what they want.

You can tax or declare SORN on an already taxed car at a post office, all you need is the green new keeper supplement. It has a different reference number on it to the main V5C, so the old and new RFL do not get confused.

I sold my late fathers Fabia, gave new owner the green part of V5. He taxed it the same day, I sent off the main V5 the following day. I got the refund a week  or so later, and it had no affect on the new tax purchased by the new keeper.
