The dreaded brake judder

Featured Replies

Hi all, I've looked through all sorts of forums and general searching on t'internet searching for help with my car.

It started off with a low wubb wubb noise at around 40mph. A vibration which you you heard and felt equally but not linked to braking. As time has moved on it has developed into the steering wheel shaking under light braking but goes away under heavy braking.

I have just changed the wheel bearing and hub which seems to have eliminated the noise at 40 but the steering still shakes under light to moderate braking.

In Feb last year the previous owner had new front brakes during a service. In august last year the same garage investigated vibration under braking, they replaced the brakes under warranty and the lower arms on both sides. All was good in October when I bought the car but the fault has developed slowly since.

'Warped' discs? Uneven deposits? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Wraped disks could be the most probable culprits here... i had the same issue... got rotors grinded to make the surface even... and vibration upon applying breaks never happened again...

Try and find a bit of quiet fast road, and do a couple of hard braking stops from 50 ish to a near stop, and see if it improves, these cars can suffer  from material transfer quite a bit that can cause low speed judder.

I tried the heavy braking technique which improved things slightly. changing the discs and pads solved it though. However I did notice that the brake pad guide bars had grooves in them which could prevent the pads applying properly. The ridge was large enough I think to jam them. I decided to file these ridges off so the pads had a level surface to travel on incase this is the cause of the seemingly short term pad/disc life. Time will tell.
