Changing oil, coolant liquid etc. What about computer?

Featured Replies

I was thinking about changing engine oil for my car. I have an idea about changing gearbox oil as well and the change of coolant should be useful too. I wanted to do most of that by myself but after some talk to my friends they started worrying - what about the computer? Won't there be any errors (for example, a friend of mine had a car that wouldn't start if the antifreeze level was way too low. He wasn't able to change it at home - there was a need for a smart garage guy)? Theoretically it might end fine. For example, if an orange oil indicator starts flashing, I know that I need to add some oil. I do it and computer finds out that everything is fine now.

So, the question is - if i change my engine oil, coolant or similar stuff completely - won't there be any problems with computer that might need some tech guy to get rid of?

Should be fine unless you have 10 thumbs & no idea.

I thought so.

Simply wanted to be sure :)

Thanks.

Engine oil and gearbox oil pretty easy to do, dunno if i'd bother with changing the coolant unless you have had a problem with the cooling system in the past.

Only thing you may need VCDS (computer) for is resetting the service indicator in the dashpod. Some can be done without, some can't.

I'm sure it can be reset but for the yearly service. For the long service (20k) it needs the main dealer to do. As for the service, looking around my car early into my ownership, it doesn't look anything too complicated. Oil filter housing under the bonnet, oil straight forward. From comments here i think the gearbox drain requires a spline bit (16mm anti tanper?). I wouldn't know how to drain the coolant though. I think there is a drain point somewhere in the system but I've never done it.
