MK2 60 Plate Oil Pump

Featured Replies

Had car in garage this morning for checkout.

Mechanic said car is known for oil pump failure & it's something I should consider in very near future. He quoted £500

2.0tdi 170 with 87k on clock

No leaks, no warning lights, no engine temp changes.

Anyone advise? Thanks.

As far as I know it is the MK1 2.0 that was the problem as I had one of them until I sold it to my son who then did have the issue, not the 170.

Others will be accurate on this matter.

I think the garage man is wrong and just trying it on or is very miss informed.

The problem was with the 2.0 PD engine fitted to the Mk I (although mine did 201,000 miles without problems)

The 170 bhp 2.0 TDi engines fitted to the Mk II's are all CR's, a completely different engine and produces (to date at least) no problems with oil pump failure.

There has been some talk of oil pump driveshaft failures (rounding off) on the 140/170 CR engines like the 140CR CBA engine fitted to my VW EOS. Later engines seem to be fitted with a larger dia. oil pump driveshalf.

Appreciate the help & advice, thanks.

For more enlightened information re. CR oil pump drive problems google 'KMB parts direct' (I have no connection with them). Read smaller print paragraph titled 'Please be aware' etc.

I thought it was just in some of the 2.0 PD engines, and was sorted out in 2007/8/9 onwards.

It was thought originally to be, but unfortunately it seems VAG fitted the same failure-prone oil pump drive setup to some 2.0 CR engines built around 2008-10.

As with the 2.0 PD oil pump problem it only affects certain engine codes however.
