Radiator Fan Not Working

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I drove to Folkestone and back yesterday in my 2005 1.6 MPI (BSE) and got stuck in VERY slow  traffic on the way.... It's the first time I've ever seen puffs of smoke (or steam/vapour?) coming out the front grill of the car!! The temp gauge stayed at the halfway point as it always does after warming up (90c) and never goes any higher. I pulled over and noticed the radiator fan wasn't coming on! My OBD scanner showed the coolant temps at around 105c although the temp gauge in the car only showed 90c. No fault codes at all.

The burning smell coming through the blower vents and out the front of the car was quite bad and I couldn't really see where it was coming from. Putting the heater blowers on full cooled it down very slightly and it was fine when driving (temp gauge would go down very slightly when driving).

Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a fuse, fan relay or maybe coolant sensor or something else? The radiator has 2 fans and the smaller one comes on when I use the AC, but I've never seen or heard the large fan come on.

probably the same problem i had. The brushes inside the fan motor not connecting with the commutator, Strip down easy fix.
