air scoop question

Featured Replies

Still finding my feet with the car really and one of the first things i noticed was the rectangle air scoop right at the top of the air box was broken. It bolts on with two torx nuts and one lug was snapped so it wasn't fitting in right leaving a big gap to draw air in the side. Now this may not cause any issues at all but it needed fixed. Removed it to araldite the two parts together then found a big massive rectangle hole at the back of it where i couldn't see for the airbox. Now this might be perfectly normal but surely a part is missing off there? I'm sure that will be drawing hot air in from the engine? Could someone have a look at theirs to see if mine is missing a cover.

This is the back of it where it sits next to the airbox. Two grooves either side almost looks like something clips in there. 2.0tdi vrs.

It's normal.

It's supposed to reduce the chance of the engine having a big drink & hydro-locking.

If you are moving it won't be sucking in hot air.

These parts are used on dozens of different VAG vehicles - the clips are probably for another fitment.

I have known people to reduce the size of the opening or block it entirely to increase the airflow through the engine.  I think the former isn't a bad idea but the latter is asking for trouble given how good the VW inlet is at sucking up water if you go through a large puddle.

Thanks for that buddy it'll be back on tomorrow just waiting for the resin to set. So, just out of interest, how effective is it on performance partially blocking off that rear vent? I do appreciate it won't be an issue at higher speeds but certainly round town hot air could possibly get in there.

I have no idea.

My idea was to make a bigger scoop (about 12" x 6") for the front that fits close to the grille and channels more air into the existing "scoop".
