Is it possible to put standard tyres on the 18" Thermisto rims that came with my 2012 Superb II Elegance Estate, rather than the low-profiles that come with it, three of which have been wrecked by potholes since owning the vehicle?

 

I have very light 16" alloy rims fitted with Continental WinterContact TS830s that I use during the winter months, which do provide a quieter, smoother and more economical ride than the the original Continental ContactSport 18" low-profiles fitted as standard... and as a combination they are almost half the weight and are amazing in the wet!  I have read on the Continental website that there is no problem running the winter tyres in Summer, a practice that is not uncommon in Northern Europe.  The only downside I can see is that the stopping distance for the winter tyres in Summer is not quite as good as the usual Summer tyres.  Continental advise that it is better to have Winter tyres on all-year round, than doing the same with Summer tyres.

What is it that you're trying to do?

The overall wheel / tyre would be too big if you don't put the correct profile tyres on. So you need to change to a different rim with a smaller diameter.

You could easily put on 45 profile tyres although they are still low profile to a certain extent but might help though.

Thanks for all your helpful replies.  Should have thought it through before asking, but obviously with standard tyres the overall circumference will be too large upsetting the speedo etc.

 

Back to the 16" winter tyres for me then...might be some 18" Thermistos with good ContiSports on going cheap on the classified soon!!

I tried vredestein quatrac 5 all season 205/55 R16 tyres on my Skoda Superb I and they were great in winter and on the way to the south of France (hot)  - very quiet as well.

 

I'm taking delivery of a 14 plate Superb  1.4 tsi with 205/55 R16  with Continentals on - I'll probably buy another set of quatrac 5 tyres on replacement
