I was recommended this OBD module but there aren't any VAG cars on the compatibility list.

Has anyone else used this and what would be the consequences of using an incompatible module?

ASFAIK - the Bluetooth ones only work with Android phones and apps (Torque, Carista) etc

iOS Apple apps need the Wifi version (for iOS version of Carista and there may be some others).

Carista should work with yours - once you have an Android phone and get the Carista app. (see http://www.caristaapp.com/)

What protocol differences are there then between, say a mk1 Octavia and mk3? I have an old serial VCDS lead, but I was given to understand that it wouldn't work on the newer cars as they require CAN?

No that's a Wifi one. You'll need bluetooth adapter if on Android for apps like Torque etc.

but if it broadcasts a wifi signal it'll work with either Android or iOS won't it?

You could connect to it on your phone yes, but I don't know if the Android app support WiFi ODB devices.

 

I'm not sure how up to date this is, but Torque only lists one WiFi connector compatible.

Go for the bluetooth one if you want maximum compatibility with android apps.

So which adapter is best on ebay then. As I suspect some UK ones are the same as the stuff from China
