Buying used Yeti from distance...

Featured Replies

I have both my van and Yeti air con serviced every two years by a local garage, I watch them do it, gas removed and dried, oil removed vacuum test for 20min, new oil put in gas put back in and topped up to correct weight, £85 a time well worth it for nice cool air and a new drop of oil in the system, and they always put the dye in so if a leak develops it can be found easily.

+1

Look if you guys want to pay for an A/C service - crack on.

All I'm saying is, A/C service is the same till-ringer nonsense that is spread by the same people who will tell you your tyre cannot be repaired once it has had the repair gloop used in it.

I've been driving A/C cars for over 20 years and never paid for an A/C service yet, and never had a system fail except for a holed condenser or a snapped A/C pipe - neither of which would have been stopped by any service.

Quite what that has to do with anything is completely beyond me. I can only assume you felt the necessity to throw some sort of derogatory remark in my direction and could think of nothing more constructive to say than that...

A proper regas involves an 'oil change' as well which those intending long term ownership see as normal preventative maintenance....say, every three years.

You presume the person(s) who carry out A/C servicing to be underhand as you presume people will think you have a sporty little Yeti.

Whatever... A/C systems don't need servicing.

As I said, if you want to spend your money on an unnecessary procedure, crack on.

If you want to throw insults at me for whatever vendetta you feel you need to exercise, I would prefer you do it privately.

^ now boys!

I used to be of the opinion that AC systems don't need servicing unless they've had a fault.

Then my Dad kept telling me how much a difference it made when he recently had his done.

So while my wife's car was in for MOT at a local independent, I noticed they advertised AC service for about £30 or so, so I asked them to do it.

Didn't think it would make much difference, as I thought the air blew pretty cold anyway but thought I'd give it a go for the price.

How wrong I was.

Hadn't realised how much the AC performance had deteriorated - air comes out *really* icy cold now.

Brilliant for a family car doing holiday trips with the kids in summer.

Also, the automated machine that does the AC service gives you a printout with the following info:

 - grams of old oil removed

 - grams of old gas removed

 - grams of new oil put in

 - grams of new gas put in

I was surprised how little oil was left in the system, and how the gas had dropped over time.

So I'm very glad I had it done.

It made such a difference that I took the Yeti down and had it done a week later.

Even on a 3 year old Yeti, the difference in air temp was very noticeable. Oil and gas hadn't dropped as much as the wife's car, but it's clear they deteriorate over time.

Will probably get it done every couple of years now.

I see the fact a used car has had an AC service as a plus point, in the same way that oil changes in engines and Haldex couplings are.

^ Another  earlier, similar topic(re ac) recommended running the system continually as gas seeps past seals that are not regularly lubricated, just my 5 pennuth!!

Well I would rather spend it on that than chrome cup surrounds and Yeti stickers....
